[Bug Report] XPS 9300 screen brightness blink/flicker

Hi,

I am posting an issue regarding to my xps 9300 screen brightness flickering. I noticed that when I stress the CPU by opening couple of web pages in Chrome browser, the screen's brightness would flicker; quickly dim by like 10% and come back to normal, and repeat this couple of times. I have a video recording showing this problem here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HlRyw97X21gPDm89mmNGlvE6to7nO1dY/view?usp=sharing

this video was recorded by iphone 8 plus with ProCam app, under 720p 240Hz, constant iso and shutter speed. Without any post processing. notice the moment i open my email in the browser, the screen flickers couple of times. and also the task manager indicates a CPU usage spike during such period.

I did two more experiments. Experiment 1: In bios, I turned off "intel speed step" and "intel speed shift" features to limit the CPU to ~1.3GHz. Open the same web pages couple of times, the problem is gone. Experiment 2: enable "intel speed step" and "intel speed shift", but using 3 cores. the problem can also be resolved.

Now here is my assumption: when CPU with 4 cores were stressed and attempted to boost frequency, it suddenly draws high current, then causing a voltage drop on the screen back light. Hence causing brightness flickering/unstable.

I have contacted Dell and they actively helping me solving the issue by sending technician to my house and replaced my screen assembly and the mother board. However, the exact problem persisted after the replacement. BTW, my machine is i7+16g+512g+1080p_non-touch.

So my friends, please try to observe if your machine have the same issue and leave a comment below. I wish the problem can be resolved by BIOS update, and it's not a design flaw. Dell is asking me to send the unit back for a further exam, but I do not know if it can be solved.

the flickering problem only happens when I am using ac power supply. It does not appear when using the battery alone.

I have the same issue. The screen 'blinks" a few times a day. I have also observed this only when working with the ac adapter on.

@Anonymous - This is your flagship product, any fixes, ideas?

Cheers all...

Hi,

Thanks for reply. I have already contacted dell and i asked their engineering team look into this issue by this week, see if it can be fixed by updating bios. I will waiting until this Friday for their answer. if they do not reply me I will have to contact them for a solution. I will keep you posted.

ps: you saw my video and confirm you got the exact same flickering/blinking? Let's see what is their solution.

Yes. I do get the same thing. Both on battery and when plugged in. Also the screen randomly dims (besides the flicker issue).

They asked me to do a clean install of the Video Driver and I did. Still no luck. Issue remains.

ok, check if the dimming is related to what you are displaying. Say you display a bright scene, dose the brightness increase? if you display a dark scene, does the brightness decrease? if so, it's related to the adaptive brightness feature of the intel's graphic chip.

dell seems still working on the issue. I was told they will contact me by Monday. You should contact them to get a solution too.

Dell is remote trouble shooting with me so far:

- Did the Dell hardware test - all good

- Reinstalled the display driver

- Started computer with clean boot

Issues remains. And it is maddeningly random.

Hope you are getting somewhere with this. Share if you can.

Cheers,

Hello! Just want to ask for any updates on this issue.

Unfortunately, I am experiencing the same issue. I just had my LCD and motherboard replaced but the issue persists.

I have the same problem seen in the video recording posted by @zrs5532

So visible on the screen when the brightness setting is on the lowest level and in a dark room (with no changes in surrounding light).

System is: XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

I had it returned, cannot be resolved. They replaced my monitor, motherboard, still the same issue, then they replaced my laptop, same issue. so, it's a design flaw to me.

I have the exact same problem on a XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 FHD and so do many other users, see for example https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/kwm8wa/review_xps_13_2in1big_buck_little_bang/

Happens only on AC (when the battery is not being charged), when running on battery or the battery is being charged the flickering does not happen.

Disabling Intel Speed Step resolves the flickering for me.

@zrs5532Any update from Dell?

Same issue here on XPS 9310 with FHD+ Panel. Only happens when on AC power.

Dell, please provide a BIOS update.

By the way, I recently bought a P3421W monitor and sometimes it has a similar brightness flicker no matter which laptop is connected. You might want to look into that as well.

The issue described here indeed affects models 9310, 9300 and 7390. Many different users on reddit already confirmed this. If you are affected too, make sure you check out https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/lj5qak/xps_13_display_issue_affecting_7390_9300_and_9310/

@zrs5532Thanks for the reply, could you maybe edit the title / first post to point out that devices 9310 2-in-1, 7390 2-in-1 are affected as well?
@ce123Do you have the 9310 clamshell or the 2-in-1 version?

@Esokra1es  It is the clamshell model.

By the way, I am reddit user undostres123, so you have me twice in the reddit list

Have the same problem with XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 FHD+, i7 16Gb. Flickering caused by method:
