Aurora R8, EVGA RTX 3080 XC3 Ultra Gaming, Noctua nf-a12x15-pwm-chromax-black-swap

Hello all,

First off big thanks to all who have posted about GPU upgrades and notably about replacing the front fan, otherwise I would have had to settle for something less. Particular mention for the thread Aurora R8, EVGA Geforce RTX 3090 install results.

Finally my project of upgrading the GPU has completed, just 2 steps, (not hard with the maintenance doc from dells website):

1. Replace the front fan with a Noctua nf-a12x15-pwm-chromax-black-swap. Done 1 month ago.

2. Replace the GTX 1060 with EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 XC3 ULTRA GAMING. Done today after 1 month waiting for the card.

Less hassle as the card fits without cutting the triangle, I am concerned about the stability of the PSU door if the triangle is cut out, applicable for all EVGA RTX XC cards (3070-90).

Thermals on GPU down from 80°C (120hz 1440p) to 73°C (164hz 1440p).

Pictures to follow

Lol yeah EVGA would be upset with the photoshopping of their trademark!

Funny, but see #7 fyi:

I was looking at my super idea of doing that pull/push thing, andd I think I found maybe a small spanner

If I add a pull/push on my stock radiator, the cooling system would move out around 10mm (yellow).
But the radiator will move towards the CPU 25mm (grey) due to the Pull ML 120 Pro fan added above it.

@Anonymous or @r72019 (the experts with me here ) do you think that hose will go up (red) or cause serious problems in this maybe not so great idea of a cheap man's mod ?

Well the hose is straight for now, if it goes right it will push the RAM, it can't go down, no space, maybe left ?

It is not that flexible, a bit stiff, if it goes up it wil have a U bend, up and down.

I am thinking about that it may add pressure to the MB mounts

Turn it, not sure, doesn't look possible to turn anti-clockwise, it will probably need 60mm to loop round to that angle, only 25mm is given in the displacement. Turning it clockwise, the RAM will block the path, even if I move the RAM to the white slots to have an extra 10mm room.

Fans coming tomorrow, has this kind of sandwich ever been done with the stock radiator?

Looks like an OEM fan pushing,

Is that possibly the OEM front fan (25mm) so it would be the same size (78mm with 2x25mm fans), or is it the OEM top fan (38mm) + slim (15mm) above the radiator, that would be bigger (82mm, radiator 29mm + fans 38mm+15mm).

Anyway, I am relieved of my initial worry if the Alien head can rotate, thanks @Anonymous , hope it's nothing complicate like dismantling it

As you have mentioned, rotating the head will cause the rubber tubes to exert rotating force on the pump mounts. You have to hold the pump with one hand to counter the force while tightening/ loosening the screws. I made the mistake of not doing so while unscrewing the pump leading to a stripped screw and taking hammer to rig.

Wow @GTS81, very nice pics and thanks for the explanations!

Sorry though, I have a couple of additional questions just to help me understand better.

Which screws, the 4 mini ones under the cooler on the dark ring or the 4 MB fixing screws?

Attached to the MB or not while rotating?

Hammer? I'll make sure I have one handy nearby

Oh another question...

Do I have to take the MB out of the case to do this? maybe irrelevant

@GTS81    Please tell me it isn't a nail in the coffin for my R8.

I considered mentioning the 'stripped screw' when I posted the photo upthread . . . but decided not to make you relive that nightmare         . . . at your expense, it was a lesson learned for me

Ok thanks @GTS81 and @Anonymous

Started looking at the pump again, decided to prepare the work today, get the cooler out and make a plan.

Removing the left panel, the led connector gave in, the plastic lip broke that helps disconnecting the leds, black wire no longer connected. Panic, put it back together, broke the left panel bottom left plastic push in clip, also lost it's lip to fix.

Plastic, plastic arrrrggggggg

Light up pc, no led left panel, no led on   but fortunately no POST errors. Must have been the -/+ power to leds.

Time to prepare plan B for more the radical idea.

  • CPU Temps manageable but not satisfactory
  • Plastic stuff breaks
  • Little space
  • The twisting pump does not seem an easy solution

I love AW, my R3 was brilliant, I love my my R8, however they are limited, time to go forward.

New Case odered, last one in stock. Slightly influenced by some thread, sorry

I see this as an intermediate move by keeping my i9-9900 and having an evolutive solution for going to a better processor later.

Now what z390 MB should I look for?
