XPS 8940, onboard HDMI activated only after 5-10 minutes
Hello,
Got a Dell 8940 XPS without Graphics Card for a bargain. So far so good. A great compact machine, but the HDMI port on the mainboard is not active on boot. It takes 5-10 minutes after pressing the power button for the PC to realize there is a monitor connected. If connected via DisplayPort, everything works fine as it should. If only HDMI port is connected + ethernet + mouse + keyboard, display stays dark, keyboard and mouse are NOT powered and nothing happens. After 5-10 minutes the white led above the audio ports of the mainboard is activated, after another half minute or so mouse and keyboard are activated and then there is the output over HDMI.
What I tried so far =
Install the newest & all available updates
Set the primary graphics to Intel instead of "auto"
Reset BIOS to factory default
Install Windows fresh on a spare SSD of mine without any dell drivers or apps
Nothing helps. The issue is still the same. Appears like there must be a BIOS setting I don't know of or BIOS is bugged somehow. Does someone have any suggestions?

your hdmi monitor has no issue. It is your 8940 bios taking extra long time to pass every firmware on POST when it detects a monitor connected to hdmi port. Have you tried fast boot option in bios? Default is thorough boot.
Default: Thorough.

@Captain_Yesteday Check the System setup options - Video menu settings in the BIOS. Multi-Display should be disabled and see what the Primary Display is set to.
In addition, the problem could be the monitor. What model monitor are you using? Does the monitor have an option for selecting the video input (HDMI vs DisplayPort) versus auto select?
One more question, when connected via HDMI, if you enter the BIOS, do you also have to wait for the display, or does the BIOS screen appear immediately?

Are you powering the monitor on when connected via HDMI before you power PC on?
Does the monitor auto-select the input source, HDMI or DP, or does it have an on-screen display (OSD) where you can configure it to use HDMI directly, instead of auto-selecting?
And why not just stick to DP since that seems to work ok?

Thanks for the suggestion ...
Tried "Minimal," "Thorough," ... "Auto" is the default after reset to factory default.
Nothing was helping ...
Display-Model is Philips 346B1C ... and yes, it has auto-detection of active video signals, and usually, it switches to the only active if there is only one active ...
I tried to switch to HDMI manually, but it does not detect any video signal.
I want to use HDMI because I've got another device only capable of DisplayPort.

This option is not available in the BIOS ... perhaps because there is no graphics card present (as I mentioned, I got it without a graphics card).
And I can't enter BIOS if only HDMI is connected ... the keyboard is not powered.

I assume you are using a wired keyboard and it is connected directly to the PC. Is that correct? Try disconnecting all other USB devices, except the keyboard and mouse, including any USB connections to the monitor.

@Captain_Yesteday - A post in this thread is marked as the solution. Does that mean you've solve this video problem?
There's another instance with the same video problems you posted. So it would be helpful to know what version of BIOS you're running on your XPS 8940...
