Re-Installing XP w/o reinstallation CD - Precision

I have just purchased a Precision Workstation 340 w/XP professional installed. I want to Reinstall in order to clean up some issues. I did not receive the Reinstallation CD for XP with the unit.

However, I DO have XP Professional installed on my other system and have the original XP CD for it.

Is there a way to use that CD to reinstall on the Dell?

Thanks for the help.

aws long as you have the COA numbers on the Precision, you should be able to use the installation disc from the other system . . assuming it was installed by Dell . .

rvbass,

Dell will replace missing software within 21 days of the computer's invoice date, so if your "just purchased" fits into that time frame you should give them a call.

If not, after you install XP using the other CD, change the Product ID to the one on the sticker on the new computer's case prior to activating it using the procedure here.

Thank you guys for the quick, informative reply to my quandary. I actually purchased the Dell from my son who says he never had an XP Reinstallation disk. Unfortunately, the system is about 2 years old (well beyond the 21 day grace period offered by Dell.)

A question of clarification, please. If the "other" system having the original XP CD is not a Dell, will the procedure for changing the product ID work or must I buy the additional license? I am retiring the other system as soon as I solve this issue.

Thanks again for your help.

If the other one is an unbranded OEM version and the same flavor ( Home or Pro) it should work . . but if it is a retail version, full or upgrade,  it will not.

Hope this helps . . wrs

Darn! It is a retail upgrade on a home-built machine so it looks like additional license is my only out.

Thanks again for the help. Hopefully, I can pass your kindness along by helping someone less knowledgeable than I.
