You can use a global hot spare to automatically replace a failed physical disk in any redundant array as long as the capacity of the global hot spare is equal to or larger than the capacity of the failed physical disk. So in this case if any of the disk in RAID 6 is failed global hot spare will replace it till you replace failed drive with working one.

Hi, JSz is correct and also, you need a hot spare for RAID 1+0 as well.

thanks
just thinking about using all 14x 4TB for a raid6 and the other 8x 4TB raid 6 without hot spare or should i reserve 1x 4TB for HS?

You need to take a call between additional space and extra redundancy. If you are ok with 2 disk redundancy you can go ahead without HS. If you need additional disk failure protection you can have HS.

In most cases you should use a hot spare, even though you'll 'lose' about one disk worth of capacity that way.
