My question is, can I still further overclock the Dell supplied memory?
e.g. By deriving best values and using the BIOS "Custom" menu option.
I ordered my Aurora R10 with 16GB of Dell supplied memory:
2 x 8Gb sticks in slots 2 & 4: 16GB Dual Channel HyperX FURY DDR4 XMP at 3200MHz
In the BIOS, I am using OC2 setting. I also noticed, the Dell provided memory is rather slow CL20, and the voltage is only 1.25V presumably at "OC2". Can anyone help explain or correct my understanding that this is very slow memory?
1600 MHz is the absolute maximum that 3200 RAM will go, so it's not slow at all. When I disabled the OC2 profile in BIOS, I didn't get even close to 1600 MHz
I just recently experimented overclocking my 3200 XMP memory.
With BIOS 1.07, I was able to select "Custom" in Performance settings and manually add my data.
I used the DRAM Calculator for Ryzen 1.7.3 tool by 1usmus to obtain my DRAM information and plugged it in.
The max voltage I could go was 1.38V while still yielding a consistently high 3DMark result. If I went to 1.39V, the perf drops, and if I select the max voltage offered by the BIOS at 1.40V my system hangs when running 3DMark.
In my case, it appears that I get very similar results using my "Custom" data settings or the OC2 profile.
Updated: 2020/08/30 I am answering my own question. Initially I wasn't fully educated about DDR4 or timings so my naive assumption (lack of reading) was whenever I hear general terms like "B-die" or CL14 ; that's the best thing for fast memory. I realized that terms like B-die or CL14 can easily be taken out of context, if you didn't have the full story. Such that it is not applicable in my case. I have 16GB (2 x 8Gb 3200Mhz DIMMs). The Dell supplied Kingston HyperX Fury memory is manufactured by Micron. They use E-Die. Micron E-die is easier to clock at higher speeds but doesn't do tighter timings. Tight timing is not an issue at up to 3800MHz memory speeds, according to the video. Terminology such as "B-die" typically refer to Samsung manufactured memory, and these operate at much tighter timings (like Trcd etc).
With that said, I decided to try out memory overclocking with the Dell supplied memory. Instead of "OC2", I switch to custom settings:
Memory Voltage: Manual
Adjust memory voltage value: 1.38V (If I do 1.39V, I think 3DMark crashed. I may try this again next time)
Memory Frequency: 1900Mhz (NOTE: I started at 1600Mhz, but is stable at 1900Mhz)
Tcl: 14h Clk
Tcdrd: 17h Clk
Tcdwr: 14h Clk
Trp: 14h Clk
Tras: 32h Clk
The numbers derived were from the utility "DRAM Calc for Ryzen 1.7.3" by 1usmus.
Again, these are for the Dell supplied 2 x 8Gb 3200Mhz sticks.
Hey @mxp0, has your RAM been running stable with your overclocking settings? What speed does it show at in AWCC? I’m surprised you got it up to 1900Mhz since the maximum is supposedly 3400Mhz (which would be 1700Mhz)
Hi @mxp0 , the highest possible memory speed for the B550A (rebranded B450) motherboard in the R10 is 3400Mhz after the latest BIOS update. Could you confirm if your overclocked 1900Mhz (3800Mhz double rate) stock RAM is stable? Thank you!
Oh wow, good to know that Alienware actually allowed higher memory speed for this MB, did you use the DRAM Calculator from 1usmus? Did you get the same timing recommendation as to the OP? Thanks @Ironyyyyy
@Ironyyyyy Thanks for the reply! Another question is how did you overclock your memory? I do not see any OC option for memory in the AWCC and BIOS, I can only choose OC2 profile in AWCC to make it run at 3200Mhz (XMP).
