Alienware 17 R5 m.2 slots Sata compatible?

So, I've had this laptop for about a week and am already itching for a little more storage.  One M.2 2280 slot is used by the factory NVME drive.  I'd love to put a Samsung 860 EVO in the remaining 2280 slot, bu they are marked PCIe only.

So will the slot run with a sata drive in it or is it somehow limited to ONLY PCIe?

And, has anyone had any luck with installing a M.2 2242 drive in the half height slot?

Thanks!

Yeah, the post you linked didn’t deal with my issue at all. Thanks for the assist though, perhaps I wasn’t clear in my OP

So, I went ahead and installed a SATA m.2 in the 2nd slot. The machine would not recognize my Samsung 860 EVO in that slot.

So, from my limited sample size of one, that is truly a PCIe only slot for nvme drives, not older and cheaper SATA drives.
