Data Migration between file systems

My customer is using Celerra NS500 with one signle file system and wants to implement both tree & user quota on the shares. There are a lots of issues managing these so he is planning to create multiple smaller file systems to segregate the two types of quotas.

In order to achieve this, he needs to move data from the large file system to the smaller file systems. What tools (native or third party) do you suggest to help get this done ensuring that the quotas and permissions also get migrated seemlessly along with the data?

I reserve final input from the implementation team folks that are involved with many more migrations than I am, but consider using server_archive (see the command reference manual for details).  server_archive will allow you to copy one directory tree to another, do it "locally" (i.e. without a migration host and without copying over the network), and will retain metadata, including NFS and CIFS permissions, softlinks, etc.

However, do you have any special features in use on the original filesystem?  Filemover/DHSM?  Deduplication?

do you know that you can acutally use different user quotas for different treequotas in one file system ?

if you still want to split the data into multiple file systems your migration tools have to be file system level

    you could use:

    - server_archive (awkward syntax but Celerra internal and can handle multi-protocol)

    - emcopy/robocopy/SecureCopy  (will only copy CIFS owner/perms)

    - rsync/cp/....  (will only copy NFS user & perms)

    - ndmpcopy  (extra util that currently isnt officially supported by EMC - be careful with older DART codes)
