Multiple authorization holds on cancelled order

Last month I placed an order which I needed to, and was able to, cancel the next day. Everything seemed smooth, until 10 days later when a new authorization hold was issued for the purchase amount on my card. The order is definitely cancelled. Confused & concerned, I contacted customer service, was assured it would be removed, and it was. Ten days later it happens again. No amount of time on the phone, emails with agents (who don't respond), and now an extensive back and forth with @DellCares on Twitter has provided an actual response. I was confident the DellCares person understood the problem, but after a week of waiting for a reply while they worked with "Finance", I tonight heard back that Finance says the order was cancelled so they can't issue a refund. This was never the problem or the question.

I have never, ever, ever had such a mind-bloggling awful experience with any company of any kind before.

The latest authorization hold (Sept 7) has disappeared, thankfully, but perhaps only because the bank expired it. I have no assurance it won't happen again. I have had to remove all my payment methods from Paypal in an attempt to prevent it. But after weeks and hours and hours, and screen grabs shared, Dell still can't tell me they won't try and charge me again for this order that was cancelled a month ago.

Posting the solution (I think, I hope) to this in case it benefits others. After contacting PayPal, they confirmed the order was still "pending" with them, not cancelled. Which allowed Dell to continue to place authorization holds on the account. I go back to Dell with this. Still not easy, but I may have managed to convince them. They are saying that "Finance" has now voided the order with PayPal. PayPal confirms this to be true.

I hope this gets documented somewhere in Dell's knowledge base. A month of struggle, getting shoved off to PayPal & my bank, for a problem which was always Dell's to fix.

THEY DID IT AGAIN. Last night, Sept 17. Despite having removed my card from Paypal. And this is what @DellCares says about it, despite the fact that this is the third time since the order was cancelled.
