Audio Keeps Fluctuating

I have a Dell Inspiron 7706 2n1 and my audio keeps fluctuating. For example, when I pause a video on YouTube, and press play to continue streaming, the audio has decreased, then after a few seconds, it returns to the normal volume level.

I produce music on this laptop, and when I'm playing back an instrumental, whenever the bassline comes in the volume on the other instruments decreases. Then, when the bass cuts out, the volume on all the other instruments increases to a very loud level, way too loud for my headphones.

Try to put the computer in clean boot state to make sure that third party applications are not interfering

To perform a clean boot, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    5. Click OK.
    6. When you are prompted, click Restart.

Note: A ‘clean boot’ starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality while in a clean boot environment, however, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after you have finished your troubleshooting.

You can test the audio driver by switching from the Realtek audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.

    1. Open the Device Manager (Control Panel>Device Manager).
    2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
    3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
    4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
    5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
    6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
    7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio Device" (the native driver).
    8. Click "Next".
    9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
    10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
