I have a E5470 that overheats when under heavy load and shuts down. The laptop is about 5 years old. This issue has become increasingly common. It used to happen once in a while but not happens every time the system is under heavy load. The fan speeds up as expected but after a couple of minutes, the system overheats and shuts down. I have cleaned the fan and the exhaust vents but that did not help. I have temporarily solved the problem by editing the power plan and setting the maximum process state to 85%. The speed decrease is not really noticeable, however, I would like to resolve the issue.
The fan is working and the speed does change depending on load but I don't think it is blowing as much air as it used to. Do fans blow less air as they get older? Would replacing the fan help?

I did Windows update last night and then the SupportAssist scan which showed three updates, including a “critical” Bios update.
Immediately after, my computer started overheating and shutting down. I can kill a bunch of processes and use the computer most of the time, but it still gets hot and shuts down.
I’m almost certain it was something in that update.
ironically, I can’t run SupportAssist because it overheats during the “Scan Hardware” phase and shuts down every time. Seems to happen when the processor temp hits 100 degrees C.
Just did SupportAssist scan again and at the end of the Hardware scan, there’s a process called Stress Test. That’s when my fan turns on, temps spike to 100 and the computer shuts down.
but I never get the results of my stress test. I believe it’s a “fail.”
Me too this issue begin like 1 month ago, and internal hardware is clean, i get the following message on event viewer

I will try changing thermal pad on CPU but I'm sure is software issue begin after update.
I'll try to dig up the details... but I somehow reduced the max speed of my processor. I ran it at a few different levels and if I remember correctly, I set it to run at 80% capacity and I haven't had any issues since.
Presumably I'm missing out on some processor power at peak usage, but I haven't noticed it... and regardless, it's better than the computer shutting down in the middle of work.
Until now I was using throttlestop and doing undervolting and using the BIOS 1.21.6. Everything was fine. After flashing the BIOS to the version 1.22.3 I observed overheating/reboot issues and a big drop of performances. The reason is undervolting was blocked by the latest BIOS 1.22.3. It seems to be a very recent Intel et OEM decisions. I don't blame them for blocking undervolting especially, I blame Intel for not beeing able to provide CPU working fine at stock settings!
To fix this, you have to:
1) Downgrade the BIOS to a previous fin version (1.21.6 for the Latitude E5470). Make sure to put ON the downgrade option in the BIOS before trying to downgrade.
2) After downgrading reset the BIOS to factory settings. It is absolutely necessary (if you want tu unlock again undervolting features) and then restart.
2) Restore your custom settings as you want (like forbidding BIOS UEFI auto-updates through OS) and restart.
After that, the Latitude is back the shape. Now, I'm done with BIOS updates with that computer and with Intel at all!
