Installing linux on Inspiron 4000

I have a functional I4000 on which the windows 2000 has become corrupt. I would like to reformat it and set it up running linux of some flavour. I don't seem to be able to get past first base since I can't reformat the HDD.

Any advise out there?

Just get a Linux Live CD, and if it'll run on the box, then install it. It will happily use the whole hard disk if you let it, overwriting all data.

Remember to boot from the Linux CD. It will format the drive for you.
Or, you can operate off the CD to see if it's the distribution you want.

Thanks for that. I have tried Knoppix, which runs off the CD but doesn't offer to install, and openSuse 10.3 which hangs just after it starts to load. I have used the openSuse disk to instal onto a desktop, so I know it works. I guess it may be too big for the old Dell laptop? Any advice on a smaller LIVE Linux I could download?

You can read the KNOPPIX website which tells you how to install it to disk.

Or if you try again with Open SuSE, try the "safe" mode. Or de-activate inessential hardware to get very simple system, install to that, then update to latest, and then re-activate the hardware and configure.

Unfortunately sometimes you have hardware that, causes issues, which get fixed later by updates. I think the Live CD has been updates more recently, the original one had issues.

You can also try Ubuntu or Kubuntu, I think and I'm almost certain that will run smoother with that system, both are live CDs and also both of them have the Install option very visible
