Blue Screen error

Hello,

My Dimension 4550 has shut down Windows twice and I've gotten the dreaded blue screen but I need help in determining my next step. Here is the full message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup option, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***   STOP: 0x0000008E   (0xC0000005, 0xF645A64F, 0xF83E69EC, 0x00000000)

***   tcpip.sys  -  Address  F645A64F  base at  F644F000, DateStamp 4234e0e9

Beginning dump of physical memory

Physical memory dump complete

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

I'm not sure if this is a bios problem or not so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The problem you are experiencing is with the operating system and not the BIOS.  The disabling or enabling of caching and shadowing settings is not an option with a Dell BIOS and by default those settings are already disabled.  If you haven't done so already you should post your problem in the Software - Windows XP forum.  Since the BIOS forum has a rather limited audience, the software forum would be the best venue in which to receive a prompt and useful solution.

Hi Majestic,  we are experiencing similar blue screens, only it's referring to our  Radeon X300 video card.  95% of our error message is similar to jeanlva's report, except for a reference to 'ati' for us (instead of tcp for jeanlva).  But until today we didn't know it was the vdeo card that was the 'ati' problem.
Today our computer resolution totally changed while using MovieMaker, to what a Safe Mode would look like (large imagery) and we were warned to save files as windows was restarting due to system error.
Our video card is Radeon x300, we have downloaded all windows updates as well as Symantec Internet updates;  our blue screens were happening before both download/updates today.

Ours is a Dell Refurbished machine (Dimension 8400 purchased mid April 2005), but still very costly.   Aren't Dell machines shipped with the latest bios updates as well as the latest video drivers for the card that is installed so it's compliant with the XP SP2 that is installed when shipped?

Thanks for your help with any of this.......... katy

The BIOS version and drivers may not be the latest.  The ones that are currently installed on your system maybe the same versions that would have been installed when it originally came off the assembly line.  It wouldn't hurt to double check.  As for the need to install the latest versions in order to be compliant with Windows Service Pack 2....  that really isn't necessary.  SP2 will work with any BIOS or driver version as long as those versions don't have any conflict with the system.

As for your blue screen problem.  I would suggest posting in the Software - Window XP forum to see what solutions are offered there.  As for the problem being related to the ATI card I would also post in the Dimension - Video forum as per my return Private Message to you.

Thanks very much Majestic!   I am having a very hard time finding these newsgroups you mention, like Software - Window XP ......  I've found xp hardware. and Dimension - Video......  Nothing on Dimension at all in the news server I am able to access through my charter account.  But I did find a dell.clone newsgroup that might be able to further direct me or even help.  I also finally found a latest driver for our Radeon from the Dell site, 20mb worth.  Hopefully by deleting the drivers in Device Manager and getting this downloaded one installed will be the answer. It's dated 2004 so it's likely it IS newer than the one the machine came with.  If not, well, we won't think about that :)

    Thanks Again Majestic!!!!

STOP 0x0000008E tends to be associated with RAM memory errors. Suggest you boot to Dell Diagnostics partition and run full memory test. You might also open the case and carefully reseat the RAM modules which could be loose or just making bad contact.

You can also remove all RAM modules and put them back just one at a time to see which one might be causing the problem. If it's bad RAM and system under warranty, contact Dell for replacements. Otherwise purchase matching modules of correct type, size, and speed for your system elsewhere.
