controller card

Hello all,

Can some body give me the specifications of controller cards that are compatible with my Dell 4100, PIII 933MHz, 256MB Ram, 40GB Hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any replies,

PKC

What kind of "controller" card do you want to add, or what do you want to do?  A general question such as yours isn't really valid.

e.g. if you wanted to add a firewire card and you stated that then someone may be able to tell you what has worked for them.

Sorry, I don't know too much about controller cards, that's why I didn't provide that information.

I am trying to add a second hard drive to my dell 4100. All the four IDE's are already used up (Primary IDE -- Hard drive, Zip, Second IDE -- CD-RW, CD-R). So I need an IDE controller card to connect the new hard drive.

Is there any other way of doing the same, keeping all the above four devices still connected?

    Thanks,

If you have a vacant PCI slot you can add an ATA PCI Controller or Adapter card that will allow you to add up to 4 additional IDE devices.....they come in Ultra TX ATA 100 and Ultra TX ATA 133 flavors....either will work but is probably best to get one that matches your new hard drive....

Promise is usually the choice of most forum members.

When my fast SCSI workstation ran out of space I did a bunch of research & added a USB-2 card and a 120GB USB 2.0 hard drive. It works very well. Perhaps not quite as fast as an internal drive, but the advantage is I can plug the drive into any other USB computer.

I'm running .NET, Office XP Pro, and many other programs on the USB 2.0 drive. The speed is very acceptable.

I hate to play devil's advocate, but with 2 cd-burners on your system, do you really need the Zip drive?  The disks have a lot less capacity, and cost a lot more.

I would suggest simply burning the contents of all your Zip disks to cd, then removing the Zip drive and putting the new hard drive in its place.
