Dual channel Question.....
Does it matter what slots the ram uses in my 5150 Dimension?I have 1G of memory...did have two...but I had to pull 1G out for another computer I have. But does it matter where the memory is? Slot 1 and 3? Or 2 and 4? The memory I pulled were from slots 1 and 3. But it seems like my computer is a bit slugish and hangs some now. Is it because of me pulling out the 1G of memory or because I have memory in slots 2 and 4?

If you do not have matched pairs (1 of each pair in channel A, the other of that pair in Channel B) the system will run in single channel mode (SLOWER)The channels are indicated quite well in the graphic Bev linked.You can also ID the paired slots by the locking tabs, one pair has black tabs, the other pair has white tabs. Put a matching pair in black tabbed slots, another matching pair in white tabbed slots.You can either have 1 pair or 2 pair for dual channel mode. No mismatched RAM or single slot usage as either will force single channel mode.

Yeah that's what I thought. I wasn't sure if the slots were numbered like thisor like this....
I have all matched pairs of ram (2 sets of 512Mb) to run in dual channel. So I guess I better switch it over to 1-2 slots insted of the 3-4 slots!! Hope this helps some others to understand dual channel memory.

Use 1 & 2 in the unmodified photo. Note they both have white tabs The original diagram is drawn CORRECTLY. On the motherboard you'll see the markings: Dimm_1 & DIMM_2 on the 1st & 3rd Slots (the ones with white tabs)

Yes, it matters, try installing the memory in DIMM connectors 1 & 2.
