Error Message in XP

I have a Dimension 4300 and am running XP.  The computer is 10 months.  Recently I have been getting the following error message  in OE and IE with increasing frequency. "Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. If you were in the middle of something the information may be lost."  The program closes and indeed whatever I was working on is lost.  I run disk cleanup, scan disk and drfrag bi weekly.  Can any one tell me how I can correct this problem?

Thank you

This can happen for a few thousand reasons.  What you need to do when you get this message is click on the button that says "Details" and write down the full and exact text of the actual error message and post it here. With that information, someone may be able to help you solve the porblem.

Have you also installed the latest updates from Microsoft (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) and the latest drivers for your video and sound card and other hardware from Dell?

Also, you say the problem occurred only recently. Can you remember what you did around that time? Installed some new hard- or software or changed some settings in Windows?

I did say recently but actually it's been a couple of months.  they just got worse along with my computer freezing up really really bad.  So, I did  a system restore which took care of the freezing up.  Then, last night I downloaded Spy Bot and I haven't had any errors today.  I am hoping that Something that Spy Bot detected was giving me the problem.  And believe me it found plenty.  I don't know why I waited so long to download something.  But then I did the same thing with virus protection.  When I had a virus and found out how hard it is to fix I got Virus protection.  Now I tell everyone how stupid it is to be without it and will also sing the praises of spyware/adware protection.  Thanks to you.  If I get another error I will get the details.

Thanks for being so helpful   Ginger

    Ginger,
Good idea getting Spybot. Ever since I discovered what spyware is several years ago I've found that roughly 95% of Internet Explorer errors can be directly traced back to one or more of the vast number of spyware apps out there.

I do have one piece of advice for you. If you have any peer-to-peer file sharing applications installed on your hard drive you should uninstall them immediately. Otherwise they will use your internet connection to download more junk behind the scenes every time you're online.

OH No!!!!!! Just when I thought I was getting smarter I find this out.  I don't know what peer to peer file sharing applications are and haven't a clue where to find them.  I don't share my computer with anyone.  Not even my Hubby.  Can you tell me what to look for?  I sure would appreciate the help.

    Ginger,
Some examples of peer-to-peer file sharing programs are KaZaA, iMesh, BearShare, AudioGalaxy, LimeWire, Grokster and Morpheus.

Don't worry.  :)  If you know nothing about file sharing applications then you don't have one installed. It's 3rd party software you have to install explicitly. As the name says file sharing applications are used to exchange files with other users on the internet.

This brings up another question.  I understood Oliver to say that I had to install these.  So that means I couldn't just see some pop up right?  I am very concerned about what gets on my computer after I saw what Spy bot found so forgive me if I don't seem to smart.  As I see it now, just about every place I go on the Web can and does put some kind of spyware/adware in my computer.
