Integrated vs Standalone

I talked to some people at best buy whom all tried to convince me that I need top notch pc for gaming with a standalone video card. Here is my question. I know integrated video cards pull memory to execute the graphics and standalone video cards are probably your best bet, but if you have a standard 128 video card with a gig of RAM memory how would that match up to a standalone video card?

Thanks,

It's not the aspect of the integrated memory pulling system RAM that makes them bad (although that is one factor), but they're bad altogether. They have a poor GPU, they're slow at everything, and you're better off even with a PCI card.

Simple put, integrated video is at the bottom of the chain, and you won't be able to do much of any gaming on it at all. A gig of ram is good, but most newer games rely on the video card more than anything else.

As for the guys at Best Buy, they were right, but they still may have been trying to get you to buy something at a higher than normal price. I'd research what you want to do with the system, and decide (by asking here or whatever) which card to get for those needs. Then you shop around and get your best deal.

You also need to know which type of card to get (PCI, AGP, or PCI-Express). If your machine is a Dell, list the Dimension series number and someone can tell you.

Here are some coupon sites for you ndwaner.  Look at them often and find a great deal on a system from the Dim 4700/8400/9100 or XPS.  If you like gaming, don't even consider the dim2400 or 3000 system.  We here, have seen the 4700 system sell for just about the same price as the 3000 with a good promotion that Dell has from time to time, so be a little patient....You see my second system below ?  Its three years old and better for gaming than that entry level Dim 2400 system.  Food for thought
