Memory Issues

I have a Dimension 9150 that says it can accept 4 gb of pc2-5300. So i took out all the sticks of ram and put 3 sticks of pc2-5300 into it and turned it on. The sticks of memory are all the exact same, 1gb per stick. It starts beeping as soon as i turn it on, one long continuous beep.

I pull out 1 sticks and leave 2 sticks in, and it boots up and works fine. I then try the 3rd stick in the other slot (there is 4 slots) and no matter what open slot i put it in, it would not boot up.

Any ideas why?

Is it possible that the motherboard might need a BIOS upadte? I looked on dells support page and there was an update but it was not relevant to my issue.

I hate to send the memory back and then realize that it was the computer, not the memory.

It sounds like that 1 stick of memory is bad, you need to take it back and exchange it or get a refund.

I just put the stick into another computer and it worked just fine.

Let me know if anyone else might know of a solution.

Is it not true then that 32-bit of windows xp home will not see anymore than 3gb of ram? I thought you needed a 64 bit version of windows to have the system see more than 3gb of ram.

You have to install the memory in pairs in order for it to work, which is the reason why it works with two and not three.
