I've been researching this for over a week & my brain is mush.
My current 755 setup is
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
2GB Memory
Radeon HD 4650
160GB - Windows XP SP3/All current drivers & updates
1TB SATA
2TB SATA
BIOS - A22
I've been looking to see the fastest processor this motherboard ( OGM819 w/Q35 chipset). I've found a ton of info but no definitve answer. I believe that an E8400 is the fastest & in my price ranges. So 1A. Is this the fastest CPU I can upgrade too? 1B. Will the stock heatsink & power supply do or will they need upgrading also? If so what power supply will I need? To add to this I found a thread somewhere that stated I could upgrade to a 64 bit CPU, is this correct & what would you recommend?
2. Memory - the software I downloaded from Dell - 'My Dell' states that I can upgrade to 8GB but looking further my current setup, 32 bit will only see 4 GB, correct? So the only way to upgrade to 8GB is via a 64 bit CPU, correct again?
Why am I doing this. I'm ripping my blue-ray collection to this pc which is now my HTPC. 3TB looks huge but not when you rip uncompressed iso. What I'm running into is that I'm compressing some of this isos to BD25 to save space but the process is taking up to 11 hours with the current setup. Any & all suggestion are extremely welcomed. While my 755 just sits there I want to speed up the process as much as I can.

After updating to the latest bios I would say up to 45nm Q9650 for the Mini Tower.
You would have to make sure that you get PC6400 DDR2 Ram if you do that.
UPDATE THE BIOS BEFORE trying to install a newer processor.

Hi Thom,
You may install E8400 and the currently installed heatsink and power supply should suffice. However, Dell has not tested this processor on this system.

The ASUS GT740-2GD3-CSM 2GB is a 75W card so it does not need an AUX power connection and works fine with 305W Tower power supply.

The OptiPlex 755 supports the Intel Core 2 Quad, Intel Core2 Duo, Intel Pentium dual-core, Intel Celeron processors based on Intel's 775-pin (LGA775) socket. You may check the list of Dell tested processors from the link shared by shesagordie.
Theoretically speaking, you should be able to install Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) on this system and it should function properly. However, Dell has not tested this processor on this system. For your reference you may also want to check the comparison between the one installed and Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400. Note: Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

Thank you for the info. Things are getting clearing on doing this upgrade.
I have an additional question. Between a E8400 & an E6850 which would you recommend. The spec & price are almost the same except the E8400 has a bigger cache. Also will I need to upgrade my heatsink & power supply also? What would you recommend?

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) might require PC2 8500 Ram.:emotion-3: Looks like the fastest ram supported by the memory hub is PC2 6400.

DID YOU UPGRADE YOUR POWER SUPPLY ?
When you updated your processor to the Q9650, did you have to upgrade your current power supply with one that is stronger ?
I want to replace my Duo Core processor with the Q6600 and noticed my 755 has an aluminum heat sink, and have purchased a copper one.
My power supply is a DELL - 305 watts. Question: can this power supply handle running the Q6600 quad CPU plus the copper heat sink? Also, will I have to replace or change the RAM ?
I would "greatly" appreciate any advice anyone could pass along.

With the Mini tower its fine. Q6600 or Q6700
Dell validated 8GB of DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) and DDR2-800 (PC6400) non-ECC memory. DDR2-1066Mhz PC2-8500 is overkill because the memory Hub will run at 800Mhz max.
