Outlook Express doesn't start

When I open Outlook Express, it takes nearly 2 min. to start. The splash screen doesn't show, it just pops up after a while. I haven't seen if it closes yet, but when I close, it still shows in the programs list after I hit CtrlAltDel. It's also slow when retrieving messages. Anyone know why it's so slow?

Have you ever emptied out your deleted folder? This will bog it down if it is full.

    Viper;
If what BlueKnight193 suggests doesn't work, do you by any chance have McAfee 4.02/.03 Virus Scan installed, and have you tried to update it online? The slow O/E was the first sign for me that my attempts at updating were a bad idea...I ended up formatting and reloading a few days later, after watching my entire Office 2000SB prog. disappear before my very eyes.

    Good luck!

If you still have trouble. Remove Outlook Express and install Eudora or Outlook. Outlook Express is a very touchy program for some reason. PLXD

I had the same problem and resolved it in the following way.
    1. Uncheck background compression of files
    2. Boot up in "safe mode" by pressing the F8 key as soon as you see the blinking curser at the top of the black screen. Now see if if Outlook Express starts normally. Shut down and open normally.
    3. Remove unneeded programs from your startup tray. Press start then choose run. type msconfig and press enter. choose the advanced or programs tab. You should see a list of programs with check marks. Uncheck programs like MSfind it fast, scheduling, etc. Look at the descriptions. Click OK and reboot.
    4. If you are running McAffe or Norton Email scan, disable it. If you have removed McAffe put it back.
    5. Open settings, choose Add/Remove programs. Click the Windows tab. Find Outlook Express. Uncheck it and it will remove its self but don't worry, it will save your addresses etc. Shut down the computer and reboot, go back to Outlook Express and check it. It will reinstall. Now it should work better. PLXD

    Ruh-Roh!
I pulled McAfee after the crash, and replaced w/Norton SW 2000...there were some things I didn't care for in that (size, complexity) and I pulled that out and reinstalled McAfee 4.02, which was preloaded in my set when new, figuring I'd be okay as long as I didn't try ther updates. 1 word:
WRONG. Less than an hour after reinstalling, same old troubles again, starting with O/E & slow I/E 5...next day, guess what I had to do. Again.

No more McAfee for me. I'm still waiting for a response from them after the 1st crash. In October.

    Good luck!

I haven't really noticed, but I did just update my VirusScan to 4.02. I didn't notice Outlook doing this until around then, I just figured it was something to do with Y2K.

Do a system file check and see if the file imagehlp.dll appears as corrupted. If so, extract f from yourWindows CD with system file checker. hit RUN and type SFC.

I tried all of those, none helped. Guess I'll have to learn Eudora.

Cool idea. I never thought of that. I just got Windows 98 and don't know all the ins and outs of its utilities yet. Where is the little tool to get rid of "upgrades" that have trashed your system? PLXD
