Problem installing a new printer

Dimension 4500, got a new printer, HP 6540.  Have not been able to install, have tried both the CD and drivers downloaded from HP's web site.

When using the HP software, I wait for the prompt to connect the printer.  However, within one second, before we can connect, the screen changes to Looking for New Hardware / Please make sure the printer is connected.  When we connect it, this screen doesn't change, but a new Windows-type "Found New Hardware" screen appears and tries to install the software.   This runs and then we get an error message:  Driver Installation file is missing a necessary entry.  This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later.

I have also tried the Add a Printer function through Control Panel, but when it gets to the part where you select the Port, it doesn't show my USB ports in the dropdown window.   I rec'd one suggestion to use System Restore to an earlier date, but that doesn't seem to work.  System Restore wouldn't allow me to restore to any of the earlier dates.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You mention a file written for Windows 95.  Is this printer even XP compatible?

Yes, the printer does work for XP.  In fact, the replacement printer is the same model I had previously on this computer.  I agree that the message seems strange since it refers to Win 95.

Make sure that you totally unistall any software associated with the old printer and start from square one.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I uninstalled all remnants of any HP software that I could find and it still doesn't work.

    Any other ideas?

Make sure to follow the installation instructions to the letter.  One tiny error and the installation could fail.  Other than that, I'm at a loss.  This printer should install with no problems.

Thank you very much for the several replies you have given.

Unfortunately, I've done it 8 times to the letter without getting it to work. I think something larger must be wrong.

When I try to do it through Add a Printer and it asks what port you want to connect via, it doesn't list any of my USB ports. I think that must mean something is wrong, but I don't know enough to figure out what it means!

    Thanks again.

Check the status of your USB ports in Device Manager.  You may need to remove them there and then reboot your computer, allowing Windows to install their drivers again.  Something may have trashed them.
