    Thanks,NVRambo for your quick reply.

This one is a little strange-sometimes the shutdown is working ok,I'm wondering if it's my mouse,or mouse pad? I'll check out the links you supplied,

    Happy New Year,

    Mike

    Take a read here:

    http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnme.php

Chances are, some program is actively writing to Windows (hogging resources) and is either delaying or preventing your opening the start/shutdown menu.

The lone shutdown problem I had with our WinMe machine was due to our DSL connection - it had to be manually disconnected before start/shutdown.

You aren't serious about your Mouse Pad, I hope!  To test the Start button, use the Windows key on the keyboard, then press the letter U key on the keyboard--twice. Once when the Start menu comes up and again with the Shutdown box. It will shut down then. PS I forgot to mention this is for Win XP. With Win 9x, just press the underlined letter key after the start button.

    Mary G,thanks for your reply,

There was some mention of the mouse pad,and the mouse on the Aumha.org site that i was reading, whether this related to my specific problem ,i don't know.I'm still looking for a solution.

I tried your suggestion and it doesn't seem to work,i'm using Windows ME,not XP. I'll keep trying.

Funny thing, after I reboot, the problem goes away. When I bring up my Internet Explorer browser, which is RoadRunner ,the problem returns.{strange?}.

    Happy New Year,

    Mike
