troubleshooting hardware

Hi - can somebody walk me through the process of running the hardware troubleshooter for my CD burner... 
 
I replaced it in April with the same exact model (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B) & it is experiencing the same exact problems - fails to burn, regardless of which program...

    make sure that you are using only one pieace of software for example make sure that you only have one media player open at one time.

    also make sure you have up to date drivers for the hardware.

    F12, boot to utility partition, cd drive self-test...

    failed optical drive BIST - dell is mailing me a replacement
