Have you tried removing the Windows 8 OS for a while and see if you will get the same problem? Also, disconnect from the Internet so Windows will not detect the validation. See if there will be any difference.

I have the 500gb disconnected now. Got the error.

I did format that 500gb and install the Dell os recovery CD you get from this PC.

Then removed that.

I only get the error some times.

Should I remove the hard drive and reset CMOS seetings ?

I went to play a game online.

In Steam then got out of memory error.

If I look at Start menu. The words disappear.

Then it also said that notepad.exe is not a windows application.

20-20 hindsight...you probably should have disconnected the old 80GB hard drive with XP on it before you installed Win 8 on the new drive...

I'm confused! Which hard drive are you trying to boot from now and getting these errors? 80 GB or 500 GB?

If you used the Dell WIndows XP reinstallation disk, it shouldn't ask for a product key. It should automatically use Dell's OEM product key to validate the installation. Did you perhaps read or type in the key from the sticker incorrectly??

You can try running sfc /scannow on the current XP installation. You'll need a CD/DVD with the exact same version of Windows XP (Home, Pro, Media Editon) and exact same Service Pack (SP3) as is insatlled on the hard drive. You can't use an XP SP2 CD to run sfc if the hard drive has XP SP3. You'd need to slip-stream SP3 onto a new disk with your XP SP2 version from the CD. SP3 can be downloaded for free from Microsoft.

If sfc doesn't help, you may have to run a Repair/Reinstall of XP. Again, you'd need a CD/DVD with the exact same version of Windows (Home, Pro, Media Editon) and same Service Pack as the version on the hard drive.

Okay years ago I burned a Dell os recovery CD on a CDR.

I have the old 80GB with XP service pack 2 on it.

I cannot install updates from Windows Update.

I just got a blue screen with bad pool caller message.

I am manually downloading Service pack 3.

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below:

    Click the Start button
    choose Run
    type cmd and then click OK.


Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll  < this  failed to load in cmd
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Then attempt to run Windows Update again.

I downloaded windows XP Service Pack 3 manually form Microsoft.

I took out my hard drive and reset CMOS settings to default.

I also did the F11 DELL PC RESTORE.

fingers crossed the manual install of windows Serice Pack 3 must of fixed it for now.

I did not know of this complicated Microsoft error that they cannot fix.

If you are having so many issues and have the Dell CD, you should probably do a clean install.

The copied CD. Was it a Dell Reinstallation CD? Did you alter its product key with nlite? How did you copy it? Is it XP Home or Professional or MCE?

I would advise you to copy it again and update it to Service Pack 3 as instructed in my wiki here.

I would uninstall any antivirus and reboot then download and install microsoft security essentials and scan.

It's fixed I reset CMOS and manually downloaded Windows Service Pack 3 from Microsoft.

Not I got thermal paste trouble.

I've used Artic Silver 5 for many years and never had any issues, providing it's applied correctly.

If you intend to reuse the heatsink, plan on cleaning it's base and reapplying thermal compound to the processor.

Directions for cleaning and applying thermal compound, are HERE.

Only need a small tube of thermal compound is needed, this can be purchased from any online, or local computer store.
