Additional RAM not working

Hi,

we have 2 Inspiron 1100 an 1 Inspiron 5100.

We bought SO-Dimms (256MB DDR333 CL2.5) to upgrade the installed 256 MB RAM.
They don't work. The notebooks produces only a few beep and nothing more, nothing on the TFT.

They are not compatible? Why? I can't believe that only DDR266 work.
Will BIOS Upgrade help, if available?

kind regards

RAM either works, or it doesn't. If it's PC2100, a BIOS update is unlikely to work.

Buy RAM certified to work in your system (Kingston KTD, Crucial).

Try removing the new chip(s) and reinstalling them.

OK, I tried it with BIOS Update. On the 5100 was A04. :-(

    DELL writes on the downloadpage:
"This file format consists of a BIOS executable file. The Universal (Windows/MS DOS) format can be used to install from Windows XP, Windows 2000, NT, Windows 9X, Windows ME or a MS DOS environment."

But on Windows XP SP2 the prgramm said: "running on an unsupported system".
    Hahaha ;-)

So I created a boot CD and updated to A32. From the release notes (OK, of A31):
    "Isues Fixed:
    1. Support DDR333(Run as DDR266) on Inspiron 5100"

But it doesn't work. There are no beeps anymore, but the notebook go to power off after a few seconds.

I will try certified RAM, OK, OK. :-(
