Bait and switch?

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 9100, however, no AC adapter, odd I thought, especially after paying for priority delivery, well, it turns out Dell has no AC Adapter in stock for the 9100's, two weeks they said, so they sold me a laptop, knowingly, a laptop that would not work within a hour after turning it on.

Thus, I am returning it and urge anyone considering buying from Dell to beware, they're perfectly willing to sell you a laptop that you cannot use, just to get you hooked into the deal rather than buy from a competitor.

No, they sold me a laptop without telling me they didn't have the parts to make it work, it wasn't a mistake, they have no AC Adapters for the 9100 laptops that take the high power wattage, but they're happy to sell them to you, and let you pay for overnight delivery for it, it's unethical.

Doesn't sound like bait & switch - sounds like they messed up. Dont attribute to malice that which can be explained by incopetance. I'd return the whole thing and reorder.

Are you saying that dell sold you a computer with out an ac adapter and are making you purchase one from them?

If so I think there is a misunderstanding, because the unit comes with one.

Other wise, if they didn't have them instock they will sell you the computer so you can get the current sale price. You would want to loose out on discounts and free add-ons just to get the ac-adapter in the same shipment and pay a lot more.

I would get on the phone with dell and explain that since you paid for the express shipping to begin with, you should get a free upgrade on the ac-adapter once it is availible.

This probably isn't a bait-and-switch, just a misunderstanding, if you purchased online, dell just filled your order to the best of their current stock allowed and will fill the rest of the order when product become availible. The same thing goes for phone orders. The person on the phone does not have an exact count on the amount of ac-adapters dell has, they just take your order and submit it to be built.

Sorry that you can't use your computer right away but if you have access to the local library or community college they have computer that you can use in the meantime.

I agree that this has to be a mistake. Why would any computer maker ship a unit without a power cord?

There is a recall happening on the "Mobility" adapters - for the Inspiron notebooks. Go to

for the story. Looks like a few weeks or so.

Ha, that story is dated today, thanx so much !!!  What a scam, after I called them last night to tell them I bought a 9100 and they didn't send the AC adapter, I could tell the guy knew the story (probably lots of folks getting scammed). After he told me he was going to ship it the 3-5 day ground method I told him I really needed it next day, he put me on hold a while and said he would next day it and get it right to me. So he placed an order for the one single part I needed, never telling me it was out of stock, I know that he knew they didn't have any, but they didn't want me to return it, so they thought they could string me a long and it would all blow over, no way, I got a return id, I'm returning it, this is my last Dell product and tomorrow morning I make my complaint with the BBB and I'm letting them know that Dell is willingly selling laptops to folks who will be unable to use them for a month or more, without telling them.

Just so you know, this wont affect their satisfaction rating, because they took the laptop back.

Would you have  kept it if they said they didn't have any ac-adapters?

They also said they will next day it, but they will when they get some.  As you heard they have a recall on somethings, and they need to test out products befoe they put the right ones out.  So do they stop selling 9100's for 2 weeks working out the problem?  Or do they sell products and then ship the recalled product out as soon as possible?

The product you need will get to you, you just can't wait long enough to get the right "working " product.  Would you have been happier if they held the entire order as long as it took to get a ac-adapter.

ALso you are not the only one needing one, many people do, and you are in a list to get one, you just come behind many other people.

This is not meant to be hostile, But I just don't understand how dell admission of a problem and them taking care of it as best they can, got your working order out as soon as possible and the dell tech promisses a part as soon as it becomes availible next day shipping is a bait-and-switch tactic.  You will get a working product, it will just take a little longer than expected.

It's so easy to bare anothers burden isn't it. I bought that computer on an emergency, needed it up and running the day it arrived, I'm a consultant, run SQL, Oracle, Visual Studio, all kinds of stuff, I don't need to go to a community college and check my juno mail and play solitare. I expect a company to be honest, not having the ability to recharge a laptop is not having a laptop. I wish you would by a car and the saleman would tell you they'd drop it off, you think, great, that's nice, but the reason they're dropping it off is they haven't invented a fuel that will power it.  Dell is saying 3rd quarter, this fall for the adapters yet still selling machines to folks who cannot use them till Halloween, you're going to see alot more angry posts, I returned the machine, Goodbye Dishonest Dell

Clearly Dell should not be shipping notebooks without any AC adapter.  If the one you ordered isn't available, they should either not ship the unit or give you a different temporary adapter.  Notebooks cannot be used without adapters...  And since the warranty starts with shipment...
