Battery recall issue
I thought I'd post this here, in case someone here knows where to forward the comment.
I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY RECALL. One of my two batteries is on the list, and I've confirmed this through the online recall system and a replacement battery is now on order. Cool!
The thing is, as I was filling out the recall form, I noted that the zeros in the product code on my battery could be misinterpreted by some as the letter "O".
So I tested my theory. I entered the letter "O" instead of a zero in place of the last zero of my product code. The result was that my battery did not need replacement. I went back and entered a zero, and the result was that my battery DID need replacement.
I sent this to customer support, but with their automated system and everything, I don't expect positive results. I will repeat, I DON'T NEED ANYTHING. Only, I'm concerned that some users (admittedly, perhaps not too bright) may enter letters where they should enter numbers --not entirely unfair given there are actual letters as part of the product code. They may get a "false" reading as a result.
Moreover, Dell could be responsible if these users fail to get the correct information.
The answer is to either have the system accept both letter Os or number zeros, or to explain on the site that zeros should be entered.
If you know who to contact with this comment, please do forward on my behalf.
Thanks!
Becky

- Allison,
If you entered the full PPID, with zeros, and it came up as not needing replacement, then the battery is okay.
The five digit code check is a preliminary check. The full PPID check is the one that tells you if your battery is affected by the recall or not. allicat1214

I also have 0s in my PPID. When I entered the PPID on the batteryrecall site, I also tried it both ways (with zeroes and with the letter "0") and both times it said no replacement needed.
HOWEVER,
my second set of numbers/letters in the code on the battery is "0RD857" . "RD857" is one of the codes listed as needing replacement. The examples show the second set of codes starting with a numeral and then letters/ numbers....which is what mine does and its a code that looks like it needs replacement. Can some of the "RD857"s be okay and others not????
I tried calling the 800# to confirm (by speaking with a live human being) and got a message saying call volumes are high and referred me to the website. I can appreciate that...however, I feel like I'm getting conflicting info.
Can anyone help me on this???
By the way, I live near New Orleans and bought a laptop to download all of my info from my desktop PC if (NOT WHEN) we evacuate for the next hurricane. Since we're now just entering the most active part of the hurricane season, I really need to know so I can get my battery ASAP!!!
Thanks,
AllisonHi,
My battery code is RD857. When I entered all the numbers it says no need for replacement. But the latest 4 digits, im my battery doesn't include all numbers. There are also letters. Is it Ok if it has letters along with a number. I mean it is like
JP-0RD857-xxxxx- xxx- 2PTJ
Is it correctly given battery code type? or should be numbers instead of letters?
- Okay now here is something I've found exceedingly annoying. The battery I had in my Inspiron 6000 was on the recall list. TWO TIMES I called and Once via Email I requested to have my battery replaced for the recall.Gave every single attempt correct and exact address. NEVER received my battery. So my question is WHY?Thanks,Redaske

Redaske:
Check your Private Messages.
Thanks!I've had exactly the same problem. Two acknowledgements that mine is on the dangerous list, but no battery received. I called support several times and was eventually told to dial a number in Germany (International call !) which rang out for an hour without being answered. I then submitted an "unresolved issue" - which has not been replied to. Dell's internal systems seem to be confused that I bought the laptop in the US but am resident in the UK.
I accept that I only noticed the recall three years after its announcement - but a recall is a recall. My house insurers would probably be quite interested in the event of a fire!

Thank you for pointing this out. There are no letter Os used in the codes, they are all zeros. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and the attention of other forum users.
