CPU broken?

I have an Inspiron 8600 which is about 2 years old.

I notice that when running CPU-programs to see which CPU-speed the computer is working at it tells me I have a 1.6GHz CPU but it is only working at 598MHz.

Can this really be true? I have tried to put load on it to see if the CPU gets faster then 598MHz but thats it..

Thnx,
Paul

The CPU is fine. If the system runs too hot, or you've seen evidence that the system thinks it's on battery all the time, that could be an issue - most likely with the mainboard.

at startup, at the dell logo screen press F12, and select boot to utility partition. Then do a dell diagnostic on the whole system. If everything passes, THEN you're fine for now. To see what speed the cpu is running at from windows, right click the my computer icon and select properties, OR go into control panel, and open up system. That should tell you what speed your processor is at. , ravi

That is Speed Step at work. To save battery life, the computer goes into half speed mode when running on battery. You can change it in Power Options by changing it to Maximum Performance or Always On. Note that the battery will run down much faster.

I have my system monitor my Ghz speed and it is always 800 Mhz -my specs with the system says 1.86 GHz-I have never seen it run at the fastest speed-is there something wrong with my I9300? It is only 5 mos old and I am not a gamer and seldom ever run it on battery mode. Anything to be concerned about??

so, I went into the BIOs and noticed that the CPU-speed was at 600MHz.

Flipped through the pages in the BIOS and noticed that Intel Speedstep was disabled.
Enabled it again and the CPU are now at 1.6GHz working speed again :)

    Thnx,
    Paul
