IDT Audio Problems (Code 10 Cannot start device)
Hello to all Dell users who most likely have the IDT audio codec chip embedded into their motherboard. I just happened to have a Studio 1747, and am still an avid Windows XP user. Although, I must say I am impressed with Windows 7 (both 32 & 64 bit). Needless to say since the beginning of the "Longhorn" (Vista) nightmare, Microsoft FINALLY got it right. Even with the few bugs it has W7 is becoming the best O/S out there. Now, that being said, I'll address the issue:
I have dual hard drives in my system, that I like to run bilaterally with W7 and XP (both 64-bit). Just my preference. But like so many of the posts I have read here concerning this issue for a LONG LONG time, after many, many hours (not necessarily all at the same time), I FINALLY found a drivers that will actually work with the XP side of my bilateral HDD system. No problems on the W7 side, just went with the most upto date IDT drivers, and am using the SB X-Fi application to boot.
Not sure what exactly is the secret here in this peticular set of drivers that date back to 09/14/2007, but for me they installed properly and I now have sound on XP, with it's added little control panel that actually works!. The driver version is 5.10.5615.0. The device mangaer labels it the same as the W7 side, "IDT High Definition Audio Codec", and the Sounds and Audio device properties labels the device as " IDT Audio" as the default device. Would you believe I found this driver through a program called "Driver Checker", and most of the time I do not use those types of driver update programs, as usually their a waste of time and money.
But this one found this peticular driver, and after manually starting within the program, I HAD SOUND!!. I really did not think it was going to work, but honestly, I was at my wits end, and was about to just go with an external USB audio device, like SB X-Fi and sacrafice one of my USB ports, and buy some external speakers. Now, one thing I will warn you about, or at least in my experience of never being happy unless it's the latest driver, in this case, after another hour, I found out the hard way that, if you try to upgrade the drivers to ANY of the driver sets that are later than this set, and there are many, DO NOT UPGRADE!!! REPEAT, DO NOT UPGRADE!!. Just be happy you were able to get the audio codec chip to work, and LEAVE IT ALONE (pounding my head on the table:) lol) . This driver set worked for me, and I hope that all of you with the same or similar problem, that it will work for you too!! If anyone does anymore "homework" on this, let me know.
Here is the link to the set of drivers I googled after the Driver Checker" program finished and just typed in IDT .ver. 5.10.5615.0. Hope this helps someone else!
Be sure to pick the second driver set ver. 5.10.5615.0 If anyone can get a later version to work properly, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm staying with this one.
