INSPIRON 640m audio issues
hi, there. i have an inspiron 640m and it has vista premium, i'm having difficulty playing audio. an error message keeps coming up saying that i do not have a sound device available. however i have a sound device and it has a driver whenever i check my device manager. please help me on how i can enable audio playbacks.. the computer keeps saying that it does not have any sound device. why is this so and what could be a possible work around?

Umm, any reason you recommend that particular driver? The 'correct' one for a 640m/E1405 running Vista is this one

Jim- Thanks for the suggestion.. I did what you suggested, however it still would not work. I have uninstalled the old audio driver and installed the new one you have provided with the link and I still cannot use the windows media player nor any player. hmm..Although before I upgraded my computer to from windows vista to vista premium, the audio was working fine. After upgrading the problem went from there. Is it possible that insalling office would effect the audio driver as well.? thanks for the reply.. i really appreciate it.

Yes, that is the likely origin of the problem. This has been mentioned before on the board. I'll try to find that thread but if I can't find it, I would suggest you re-install the Dell Notebook System Software, then the Intel chipset, then the Sigmatel again.

If the audio was previously working and you have not reformatted or installed an Operating System, try using System Restore. If that fails then download a new driver.
