L400 laptop -- Touchpad doesn't work - Win2k SP4 installed
I purchased a used L400 Laptop - The Touchpad dosen't work !! -- It can with Win2k SP4 -- PS2 mouse shows as a hidden device in DM. I've uninstalled it - But it comes back the same as an unknown device.. I dloaded the Synaptics driver - still same result. Would reinstalling the OS help ?? or is it just broken ??

- THe synaptics driver you referenced was no help. The first thing I tried was to upgraded the Bios from A03 to A09 - It has 2 settings for the internal mouse - Enable and Auto disable. This result is the same for either - no mouse pointer -- When I plug in a USB mouse - I can see the mouse pointer and it works fine. -- Dmanager says "This devise is not present. is not working properly. or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24) -- Would this be a bad motherboard issue or something simpler ?
- Dell Diagnostics (also available from your Dell Driver Download site) should check the hardware for you.
Since Win9x - WinXP has generic touchpad drivers to operate TP (not disabled in BIOS Setup) would think
Win2k would also have that and no action at all from TP means Hardware failure.
No idea on MB as TP is a part of "Palm Rest" and plugs into MB but sure that hardware failure could be
traced to either of those components, or the connection between them.
Never had a Hardware Failure, so never been there.

Dell Download is showing version 7.5.7 and Synaptics has 8.1.2 avaliable.
Either one should function on your system though???
Check in BIOS Setup, disable is one of three options for touchpad,
(or disable when external mouse connected or have both).
