Media Direct Button
Hi there,
I'm the new proud owner of a xps 1710. However, when I first received it I immediately reformated and reinstalled windows xp taking care to first install media direct cd as the instructions specified. Its now partitioned as I like it and the computer is running great.
My only niggle regards the dell media direct button... when the computer is switched off and I press the media direct button, the computer turns on and goes to media direct as expected. However, when I have the computer turned on when I'm running windows when I press media direct button a quick set media direct box flashes up which says " Unable to launch Dell Media Experience. Please install this software and try again."
My question is whether or not this is meant to happen?
Any input/solutions would be greatly appreciated.
- i guess that's the reason why the Media Direct is not working when running Windows XP Professional. You have to have the MCE 2005 to get the Media Direct to run when running Windows which uses the Media Center!

- you have to be running "a" version of windows XP, and have Dell Quickset installed and running.once Quickset is installed, you will then get an error pop up that says something like "Dell media experience not found".so, you can install Dell Media Experience, or you can point the Reg key to just about any program you like.you have to create a registry key, like this one i made to launch windows Media player:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\DMX.exe]

Then create a string value to the directory of your choice. in that directory, copy and rename the EXE file you want to launch to "DMX.exe"... like i made a copy of wmplayer.exe, then renamed the copy to "dmx.exe".works like a charm :) - hello there ,,i have a new dell laptop inspiron 6400 and i installed windows xp pro , but there is no any software for the media direct button on the quickset , and every time i press that button i get the usual message about installing the software for the button,i just wanna know, is it coz i use Windows xp pro, ?? or do i need to download and install any software to make it work on windows xp pro,, ??i really wish i get an answer for that question coz it irritates me so much,,thank you in advance,

- ok, the button and quickset are both working fine... the problem is you do not have Dell media Experience installed.when you press the media direct button, quickset looks for the following programs: Dell Media Experience (or dell media direct for windows), Cyberlink power Cinema, and windows Media center. Since you have XP pro, no media center for you.i'm guessing your computer shipped with windows Vista, so its pretty doubtful that you are going to get a copy of Dell media Experience.There is a method that was posted by me (and other people) to edit the registry and make quickset launch what ever program you want... it works, i've tested it.The other option is to uninstall quickset, then install the keyboard application posted a few back. Then you can use that application to launch whatever program you want, by editing the "email" button.hope that wasn't too confusing.
