memory

I have an Inspiron 5100 with 512MB of RAM.  All of a sudden the laptop only recognised 256MB.  I have checked the RAM and its OK, but DIMM A has stopped working.  Has anyone else had this problem?  It the only solution a motherboard fix or putting 512 in DIMM B????

    It has happened, yes, and yes, there are three solutions: replace the mainboard, have that one repaired by a surface-mount rework shop, or use just the second socket.
