Memory
I have a Inspirion 1000. I would like to know what type memory it takes and how do you replace it? I am not really familiar with laptops so any assistance would be appreciated. I thought that they might take sticks like the desktops. Thank you.

I don't like these new forums. So hard to find things and manuever around. Plus it seems that there are a lot less folks here that are willing to help you out.
Can someone tell me about the memory in this machine? I had the compartment open and couldn't see a thing. Am I suppose to remove something first?

Your Inspiron has 256 MB built into the motherboard and has one slot that you can add another 256MB of memory for a total limit of 512 MB.
The memory specs are: Part #: CT381330 • DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • DDR333 • 2.5V • 32Meg x 64 •
I copied the specs from Crucial's website. The memory stick is installed on the bottom of your notebook on the corner opposite of your battery. I believe there is one very small screw holding the cover on. The notebook must be shutdown, unplugged, and the battery removed before working on it. You should also be grounded. Touch a piece of metal before touching the notebook to prevent static electricity damaging the chip. Before you order a new stick, make sure your one and only slot is available with nothing in it. You can also tell by looking in the BIOS or Device Manager in XP's Control Panel. If you have more than 256 MB, then you have a memory stick in that slot already. The memory sticks look similar in design to the sticks used in desktops, but are a lot shorter. My favorite place for memory is Newegg.com and memory is very reasonable right now. Too bad your system will not take more than 256MB in that slot as 512MB is not much more money.
