Problems after reformat

Inspiron E1505/6400 Laptop, OS = Windows XP Media Center 2005

Significant operating issues caused me to reformat hard drive and reload computer. I used the Dell recovery disk and downloaded "necessary" drivers from Dell website.  I am now experiencing the following issues with the computer and I have not been able to resolve them.  Can anyone provide assistance?  Thanks!

  • Media Direct does not work.  I get the blue screen of death when I attempt to use the MediaDirect button (when computer is off).
  • Computer will no longer Hibernate when left unattended or the lid is closed.
  • I cannot control the volume and the buttons on the front of the laptop do not work.  I should have SoundBlaster Advanced Audio but when I try to load the drivers, I get a message that the hardware is not installed?   In the Sounds and Audio control it stes that ther is no audio device.

I would appreciate any assistance to resolve these issues.

I used what the Dell tech sent me.  Assuming I did not follow the proper sequence, how do I fix it now?  Start over?

    Thanks,

Did you install the drivers in the correct order?  The Notebook System Software should be installed first, followed by the chipset drivers.  Without these two, Windows will not be able to properly install drivers for many other devices.  You should also install the Dell Quickset Utility.

It would probably be easier to start over.  Just make sure you have all applications and drivers ready to load.  All can be downloaded from:

    Steve,

I reformatted the HD again but I still have a couple of problems even though I loaded all the drivers in the correct order.

    • If I attempt to run MediaDirect while the laptop is off, I get the blue screen of death.  It will run from the applications menu.  MediaDirect did not create a separate partition, should it have?
    • The volume control buttons now work on the front of the PC but there is no visual representation of the volume as there was previously.  Any ideas?
    • In the Sounds and Audio control it states that there is still no audio device?

    any other suggestions?

Sorry, I know nothing about Media Direct.  You should post on the Software - Windows XP forum to get an answer to your question.

Did you install the audio drivers and software for your audio device (under on audio on the following download site http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

You should have started the process of reinstalling the OS by first inserting the Mediadirect CD so that it can create its own partition and install itself first.  Only after that, you are supposed to insert the OS CD for the OS reinstall.  If you have the manuals that came with your computer, check the manual that came with the mediadirect reinstall CD for the correct procedure to do a reinstall of the OS.
