Problems with screen

Hello all,

I bought a dell xps m1710 laptop (win xp) about 6 months ago, and I'm having a problem with it.

About a week ago, I started the laptop up and noticed a series of green squares appear  on the screen. Then windows starts to boot, and the green squares were replaces with a faint white grid across the screen. I logged in, and everything looked normal. But then, every 60 seconds or so, the screen would flash on and off.

I tried to reboot several times, and got the same problem. Now when I try to reboot, the green squares appear, windows starts to boot (with the white grid lines over the screen) and before the log in screen shows, the screen goes black, and remains that way. the hard drive lights flickers as usual, and I can hear the fans running ok.

On one occasion, the log in screen appeared. but it looked like it was using a very low resolution. I logged in ok, and my desktop appeared with all icons, but it looked like it was using 480 x 640 res. So I though this problem might be the graphics card.

anyone have this problem before?

Run the Dell diagnostics (F12 at boot) on the video card. It will likely fail - if it does, record the error and call Dell for a warranty replacement of the video card.
