Hello. I am thinking about upgrading the ram on my n5050 (Inspiron 15). I've checked a website to see what kind of ram is compatible, in this case it could be any of these , DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 PC3-14900, DDR3 (non-ECC) ( Source from http://www.crucial.com/uk/upgrade/Dell-memory/Inspiron+Laptops%2FNotebooks/Inspiron+15+%28N5050%29-upgrades.html) However i just want 2 gb so my memory goes to 6gb because i don't want any trouble with memory for the next year or so, but most people say to buy 2 sticks instead of just 1 because there might be a problem with the ram compatibility. I was thinking about buying a samsung 2gb ddr3 pc3 10600-1333 mhz ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-memory-10600-1333MHz-SODIMM-laptops/dp/B004F1KY3I/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1378062796&sr=1-6&keywords=2+gb+ddr3+204) but i'm not sure if it is gonna be compatible with the default N5050 ram. Also most pairs of sticks of ram are quite expensive compared to a single stick. I would like to know which is the best option, to buy the single 2gb ram or to buy a brand new pair of ram sticks, and if the 2gb would be compatible with the default n5050 ram.

If you now have 4G, it's a pair of 2G modules - you'll need one 4G to to to 6 (there are two slots, so you'll replace one of the 2s with a 4).
Be sure you have a 64-bit OS though - or the added RAM won't be useable. Better would be to install a pair of 4G modules and go to 8G.
You need PC10600 (aka DDR-1333) RAM -- not the DDR3L (low voltage) type.DELL-Allan D

Hi All,
I am planning to upgrade the memory of my N5050 Dell laptop.
I understand that , it can take only 8GB RAM.
Can i remove the existing 4GB stick and add one single 8GB stick?

Hello Lidiano,
The Inspiron N5050 supports up to 8GB DDR3 1333 MHz SODIMM memory. Since you have just one 4GB memory stick, you can certainly install a 2GB DDR3 1333 MHz memory stick to make it 6GB memory. I would also like to say that greater than 4 GB memories require 64-bit operating systems.
