Speed problems
Hi.
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 8600 (2ghz, 512, 80gb) a few months back and of late it has started performing really really slowly even though I am only browsing the internet or typing a word document. The system shows that the CPU is performing at 597Mhz, Task manager shows that there is only 20-30% CPU usage, but it takes forever to do anything.... I have run virus scans and ad-aware, and there appears to be nothing wrong software wise. I think it may have something to do with speedstep not re-enabling?
does anyone know of a solution?
Regards
Stuart

- hmm, 20-30% CPU usage when just browsing the net and typing Word documents seems a little too high.
Seeing that you have checked your system for viruses, Trojans and spyware I would suggest that you doublecheck to make sure that your hard drive hasn't slipped into PIO mode.
When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? stuartmccusker

Thanks for your replies so far guys.I have change the power setting, so hopefully it might fix something. Ill given the reg tools a go and I only defraged like 4 days ago. So i guess now I have to wait for it to happen (or not) againRegardsStuart McCuskerI have a Inspriron 5150, I have been having alot of problems, and trying to get all info. I can to fix any of the problems. I'm not a computer tech. but there are alot of basic things I can do with a computer and when I have info. or steps to take (instructions) I do very well. This will be another piece of info. (if replied to) that may help me. Any help would be great.
I think I have heat problems. (I have used the forced air to clean out) My fan runs alot more than before, the laptop gets hot on my leg. I do hold it up so the fan is totally clear.
My computer is alot slower than before, I need to get rid of some things. However, it seems my laptop likes the way it is:smileyhappy: because I can't unistall, system restore, or anything.
Sorry, for the added notes. I really want to fix all of these but even one at a time would make me happy, any improvement would be nice.
One question is I saw where someone was talking about the task mgr. and mine has been saying 100% cpu usage. This would be one of those things I'm not sure on. What should it be, and there is about 51 processes, 1 application, sometimes when it's frozen and I have to shut it down using task mgr there is 0 applications and alot of processes.
In performance it shows 100% cpu usage, PF usage 220 MB. I don't know enough to know if these are o.k. or really how to read all of the info. example; commit charge, kernel memory, etc..
Sorry that this post is so long, I normally keep notes short except when frustrated with my computers then alot comes out, and may not even make sense. I just need some help with this laptop, without some huge expense with the help. Unless of course if there is no way I can fix it then I know there are expenses( I wish them not to be huge of course).
- Ali5: CPU should not be at 100% - if maintained you are simply running too much that at one time and system has trouble handling it. Do spyware & anti-virus scans - I bet you've got garbage taking your resources. Worst case, copy all files to save to a CD or 2 and completely reinstall O/S and all applications, bookmarks, etc. Make sure you have all original installation cd's, screenshots of impt settings (i.e. your ISP setup) to rebuild properly. Undertake when you've about 2-3 hours to completely reset to how you want system.
WinXP uses 'processes' to provide granular mgmt over the O/S. There will always be a number of processes running, we can't list them out for you to say these are 'good' or 'bad' for your system (number 51 is not unusual) - many times it depends on hardware (printers, scanners) and software installed, along w/networking setup.
Bill Bill,
Thank you for responding, The only thing I have running is the internet because nothing else runs, I have tried to run the scans. Nothing will open to run anything it just sits there with the hour glass, I have tried even thru just run command and the only thing that will open is spider solitaire. Right now I can only go online and print if needed. I only plug in printer when needed, other than that I don't have anything plugged into the laptop. Even when the programs try to open they do not show up in task mgr (not responding, running, nothing) I have tried to reboot in all the various ways (using the F8 or F2 I usually have to wait and see the screen to get the number) when it comes up, still nothing will run in any of the boots. I tried system restore "can't restore to that date" or other dates, I rarely can this to come open. Defrag won't open to even do that, I'm at a loss. How can I find out if there is something corrupt or just gone if I can't get into the computer itself? Since I can't get in I won't be able to save anything to a disk, I do have some things that I need to save but not to the point I can't live without. I am wireless thru a cable modem to my understanding that doesn't make me networked, Does it? I am worried even if I do use the disk to redo all. Will it really get rid of any problems? (Always wondered about this)
Thanks,
Ali
