Start-up Help
On occassion, when I start up my laptop, it reaches the desktop screen but nothing will load and the green "hardware light" next to the battery indicator on the laptop (not on the screen) will blink at a constant slow pace, and the mouse has difficulty moving. I have to press the power button manually to shut it off and hope that the next time I restart it, the laptop will start up normally. I've tried removing any unnecessary program from my start-up. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

- 1. System Model: Dell Latitude D600
2. Operating System: Windows XP Professional
3. No recent hardware/software updates - this problem has been going on for about a couple months.
4. Troubleshooting steps I've taken: make sure all system bios/drivers are up to date, reinstall drivers, clean up start up to make sure no unnecessary problems, up to date on norton anti-virus and adaware
5. BIOS & drivers up to date.
Thanks for your help - looking forward to your response. - Then (assuming you're still working with the factory installation of WinXP, and assuming you've already followed the troubleshooting steps in the User Guide and run the Dell Diagnostics to rule out hardware problems) I'd do the same thing I always do when I get a new PC - format the drive and install XP the right way, rather than the way they send them from the factory.

If I re-install XP, will I lose any of the programs/information on my hard-drive?
If you do it in the fashion that will result in the greatest improvement (i.e., to a formatted hard drive), you will lose everything, but then, that's why the experts stress regular backups of all crucial data. These things are not designed to run forever, nor are they adequate substitutes for data backups to external media.
