By all accounts, the D-chassis (600m/8600/D600/D800) will continue with the new hardware release. However, the release likely marks the end of the line for AGP video in Dell notebooks -- ATI is forecasting that 70-80% of all new notebooks will ship with PCI Express by year's end, and Dell has been among the most aggressive at pushing PCI-Express on the desktop.
Translation: if you have any video upgrade plans at all, wait to buy if you can. Basically everything that's currently available has now seen its last video card upgrade.

No the 8600 has not been out for 2 years. The 8500 came out in March or April of 2003 and the 8600 in late 2003.
It should be replaced with a completely new model as that design is OLD. I suspect the new style/model notebooks will be based around a 700m or 9200 style.

I bought the 9100 last summer and although it is a powerful machine, I haven't been happy with it. I was considering replacing it with the 8600 but if it is being discontinued I'll wait. The 9100 was discontinued just a few months after I bought it.
