Won't recognize AC power ???

My Latitude cpx has the following issues :

Upon start up, I get the message that says you should change your battery, blah blah blah...... even though I have the AC adapter plugged in!

I recently tried to install SP2, got a message stating you must be on AC power to install.  I was on AC power!

Even with the battery removed, I can go to control panel > power options > power meter and it says i'm running on a battery, with 0 power remaining.

The little battery icon on the task bar also shows 0 power, with no battery installed and running on AC power.  It should display the AC plug icon, when plugged into AC of course.

The battery does not seem to charge when plugged in, the battery shows two green lights when I check it.

Whats going on?  Any thoughts?   I probably need a new battery, but whats the rest of it all about? Oh by the way, all of this existed before and after a fresh install of the XP Pro OS.  Also updated the Bios, and any applicable drivers etc.

Thanks for any ideas,

Jeff

    Hi,

Take the battery out and see if it knows its running on the mains. If not you will need a motherboard. ( or at least the DC board )

    Hi,

It wont be a software issue, take the HDD out and you should get the same results. ( no software )           I would start looking for hardware......... It may also be worth updating the Bios in case it is corrupted, a bit of a long shot though. Is your battery a grey top ?

                                                                             Regards Chris

Thanks for the input, today I brought the latitude with me to work.  I tried another working power supply, no change.  It did not recognize the AC power and indicated it was running on a "0" % charged battery.  Then I borrowed a fully charged battery, installed it and got the exact same response.  It indicated I was running on a low battery and should change batteries or I may lose my work and so on.

I have tried removing the battery, used the AC adapter and it still indicates it's running on a drained battery.

    Could this be software related?

    Hello,

Thanks again for the help.  I have a black battery, C3149.  At work the battery I tried was grey, 4600 mAh, I believe.

I have updated the bios a couple days ago, with this update: A16-CPSJ.exe   It did not change anything as far I can tell.

Tonight I removed the hard drive, powered it on and entered setup.  Here's what I found.  I paged to the battery status page.  My battery was in the left slot.  It said the left battery was idle and 0% charge.  The right side battery indicated no battery was installed.  My CD/DVD is in the right side.  So I switched the battery to the right side.  Guess what, it said the exact same thing.  By the way, Power Management is enabled.

Is it time to shop for a main system board?  If it's worth it.  I'm not sure how expensive they are.  I've done my own PC main board several times.  Is a laptop much more difficult?

    Thanks,  Jeff

Replacing a laptop MB is quite involved given that you basically have to pull the whole thing apart, and may present a bit of difficulty to someone who hasn't replaced one before. You can find the teardown instructions by searching through the product support tab at the top of this page.

I personally wouldn't find the expense worth it, given that your system wouldn't be under warranty. If, for example, your LCD dies the following week, you'd have wasted your money.

Just another thought, could the power board be the culprit?  It looks easy to install and it seems I can pick one up for about $20.  I guess I wouldn't mind taking a shot at it for that much?

    Thanks
