(yet another) memory update question

Hi all,

I am doing a memory upgrade (to 4gb) in my Precision M65 and I guess that like many I stumbled in the following problem (and explanation)

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

My question is why the M65 behave this way, considered that it should be a 64bit processor.

Please note that the 3.25gb of available memory is shown first by the bios, so it is not a operting system problem/limit (I use Linux 64bit) as one can think, see for example

thanks in advance

    Since 2G memory modules hadn't reached mass production when the M65 was designed, it's not possible to have been given an honest answer on that score.

    By the way, I'm just mad as the people that commented in the link I posted. Three years ago I bought the M65 because I wanted a laptop with 4gb ram support, to be installed in the years to come. I remember clearly to have asked very well to the Dell salesman about this detail.

    That answer is correct- the oldest Intel chipset that supports memory remapping is the 965.  With the 945, you will not see all 4G.

    I have seen comments of people that allegedly have a full 4gb of ram support using windows 64bit installed on a Dell Inspiron d630 laptop, that should have the same motherboard of the M65. Or the d630 mb has the 965 chipset?

    You are right to use the word "honest". At that time I basically asked: can I have (one day) 4gb of ram? and the answer was yes. So the salesman was not honest or not enough informed or both. The result is the same. I bought a 2000$ machine and now I miss 750mb of ram that, now I have switched to a 64bit os, would have been handy to handle the heavy tasks I need to do.

    The D630 is a Santa Rosa system - socket P and Intel 965.  The M65 is a generation older with the 945 chipset.

    Note: The below post has been already deleted by this forum admin thus now it's an edited version:emotion-10: and I truly hope that now it's ok, isn't it?:emotion-11::emotion-1:

    Howdy all people around here!

    hahahahahaha.... this is same old complain of the customers of M65 & M90 screwed by Dell Corp...:emotion-5:

    This problem was well known even years ago but before purchase I was also directly and straightly assured by a Dell sales staffer that 4GB RAM is totally OK with 64-bit OS... so in early 2007 I've expected to buy the best one for more than $2500 but....:emotion-12:

    Here is a reference link about the Intel 945PM chipset problem:  http://www.ifrankie.com/?p=70

    And here is another reference on Dell models, RAM & chipsets: http://www.edgetechcorp.com/memory-specification-guide.asp?cid=15152

    However there are also some good news regarding upgrade ability of M65:

    1. Win7 x64 Ultimate works OK;

    2. Both WLAN & WWAN slots are made in decent way as the full-size PCI-E including USB D+/- signal lines, therefore you can upgrade WiFi card to Intel WiFi/WiMAX 5150, 5350 or 6250 ones featured both Wireless N and WiMax 3-4G smoothly;

    3. If somebody needs a schematic diagram of the motherboard of M65 & D820 - it's same Quanta JM6 pls let me know. Another one for Precision M90, Inspiron 9400 (1705) & XPS M1710 is also available.

    regards,
