Can't view web pages

I have an Inspiron 6000 that's been working fine for the whole month I've had it.  I connect through a cable modem.  I then bought a Linksys router but could not get it to connect to my desktop (running Windows ME).  I called Linksys and they helped me get the router connected by putting in IP addresses.  While I was still on the phone with them I checked my notebook to make sure that I was connected and I was.  When I clicked on internet explorer I couldn't view the web page.  I can access my email but I can't view any web pages.   Linksys told me that it was a problem with windows or my computer.  I then called Dell, twice.  First time they couldn't really give me an answer and the second time they said to contact my ISP.  Both times they had me type in ipconfig, ping, etc.  I haven't contacted my ISP because I'm not sure this is the problem.  I took my notebook to work and had the same problem.  Email yes, internet no.  When a page first loads it doesn't give any error message, it's just blank.  Then when I type in another website it says page can not be displayed.  I tried running winsockfix and I also tried unplugging the modem and router.  I'm still looking for help, please.

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

It looks like you are connecting just fine to the router, but the router is not connecting to the cable modem.   Have been switching the devices connected to the cable modem (i.e. switching between a computer and the router)?  If so, have you been resetting the entire network every time you change the device connected to the cable modem.   This is necessary because the cable modem remembers the address (MAC address) of the device that it was last connected to and will only connect to that device until it is reset.  To reset the network you need to shut off the cable modem, router, and all computers.  Wait 5 minutes (important) then turn on the modem first.  Wait another five minutes then turn on the device that is now connected to the cable modem (either the router or a computer), then, if connecting through a router, turn on any other computers connecting through the router.

Try resetting the router to its default settings by finding the reset button on the back of the router, then pressing and holding it in for 5 seconds.  If that doesn't work, try disabling any firewalls running on your computer to make sure that they have not been misconfigured to block internet access.   Also, if you have both the router and the USB connected to the modem at the same time, you must unplug one of these and do the reset procedure outlined in the previous post.  You cannot leave the USB connection in when connected to the router and you cannot have the router connected at the same time you are trying to use the USB connection.

Thanks but I have tried this already.  I thought that I knew I was connected but I just can't see the web page.  I can't even do a direct connect using USB.  Nothing comes up but once again I can still use email.  Any other thoughts?

It didn't work.  I went to turn off my firewall and try it but that didn't work either.
When I click on Norton and go into personal firewall I am unable to click on networking.  It says,
an error has occurred in the script on this page.
    error: unspecified error

based on the information above, you have linksys router and you already reset the router back to factory default, right. however, you ip address is still 192.168.0.1. fyi, the the default ip address of linksys router is 192.168.1.1. therefore, you ip address of your computer is invalid. what you cand do is check first the setting of your tcp/ip. you may click on start > control panel > network connection > right click the local area connection icon first and then click on properties. then, you will see "this configuration uses the ff setting". look for the internet protocol tcp/ip. all options there should be obtain ip address automatically and the dns should be the same. then, click on ok all the way out. same goes with the wireless connection icon. then, restart the computer. check your ip address by clicking start > run > type cmd then ok > on black screen type ipconfig and then hit enter. your ip address should be 192.168.1.x (something) and default gateway should be 192.168.1.1. this will apply for win xp only. for the win me. check first the ip address by clicking on start > run > type commmand and click ok > then ipconfig again. if you have invalid ip restart the computer. please let me know the result so that i could give other solution.

Temporarily uninstall the Norton stuff.  It has been known to cause problems, even when the firewall is disabled.  The fact that you are getting errors when you try to change the firewall settings, indicates that there is a problem with the software.
