I bought a USR5686D external serial modem and my add new hardware could not find any new hardware. When I turn on the modem a few minutes later the computer shuts down.I tried a Belkin gold series cable and a Radio Shack RS-232 cable. Anybody know what's causing my computer to shut down.
Have you uninstalled the original modem first from the hardware devices, and uninstalled the software. Then you need to shutdown your computer, and start the install of your new modem again. The USR modems usually come with good step by step install instructions.
The modem might has been shipped with old drives; check USR for updated drivers.

I went into add/remove programs and removed Intel(R)537EP V9x DF pci modem. I checked the device manager and modems was now not listed. I turned off the computer and then removed the pci card.I turned on the computer and went to desktop and let it finish startup and then shut it down.I then installed the external modem and turned on the modem power and the powered up the computer and went to desktop and waited for the found new hardware wizard. The found new hardware wizard never came up and the computer then shutdown on it's own. I tried it a couple more times and it kept on shutting down. I then shut off the modem and restarted and installed the USR control center from the disk.I turned on the modem and clicked on the control center and it tried to search for the modem, but could not find it to finish the install. The compter then shutdown after a minute or so. Could there be something wrong with my serial port?
You need to uninstall the software and start the install all over again. You are looking for a .inf file to make this modem work. Many times you can not depend on Windows XP having a driver unless the item you want to install is a very old device. The driver will be located on the OS disc and not on your system, because you were using a different modem.
You can check to see if your serial port is working by going to opening MSword >Help>About MS office>system information>hardware resources>right click the +> you will now see the COM ports. If you are using AOL you can find the information in their system information.
If they are not working check your manual about how to go into the BIOS of your system.

I don't have MS Word, but Com port 1 in device manager say's device is working properly. Well I tried again to install this modem with no luck. What ever I try doesn't work. Everytime I turn it on my computer shuts down. I tried manually installing the drivers, but get to a dead end with pick which com port. The only options were all ports or Selected and all ports could not be selected and the next button was not active. When I go into control panel, modems it shows USR 56k EXT modem (not present).I think there is something wrong with the modem or it's not really compatible. I read somewhere that if a non compatible device is connected the computer will shutdown.Maybe I'll try another modem. Does anybody here use this modem with XP?
