Wired Ethernet and 56K Modem Problems

Hi everyone,

I own a Latitude D600 use the wireless adapter every day without a hitch. Recently though, my computer has failed to recognize both my wired ethernet adapter and my 56K modem. These two components both came with the system and worked fine until a point. I first noticed the problem when the wired connection did not appear under "Network Connections". I visited Device Manager to find only the 'TrueMobile 1300 WLAN' listed under network adapters, and no ethernet adapter. I downloaded fresh drivers from the dell website for both the modem and ethernet adapter* but when I tried to install either, I eventually would get a message along the lines of "no adapter found".

My only guess is that there is some physical problem with these two pieces of internal hardware (they are right next to each other on the back of the computer). Another weird thing, the ethernet port lights up and shows activity when the wireless adapter is being used, which may suggest it is not physically damaged.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Patrick

*Modem= Conexant D480 MDC V.92 Modem
Ethernet Adapter= Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller

    Patrick,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Please update your Dell Community Forum user profile with the service tag of your system.  I should also make you aware of a hardware scan that Dell supplies.

    1. Go to the main support site.
    2. Click on the Current Configuration link.
    3. Accept the agreement.
    4. Perform a hardware scan of your system.

I ran the online scan a few minutes ago, with strange results. Under "network cards" it said:

Dell TrueMobile 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card - Packet Scheduler Miniport

Dell TrueMobile 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card - Packet Scheduler Miniport

Dell TrueMobile 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card - Packet Scheduler Miniport

So it obviously didn't find my wired ethernet, and it reported three instances of the wireless adapter. I think I may call support this afternoon.

    Thanks, Patrick

    Patrick,

I found the following on your system order:

    • INTERNAL 56K MODEM
    • TRUEMOBILE 1300 802.11B/G

You may need to consider purchasing a USB, PCMCIA, or 1394 solution to this.

After a little trouble-shooting I figured out those devices had been disabled in the computers BIOS. If you have the same problem, it can be fixed. Hold down F2 when booting to start editing the BIOS and flip through a few pages (with Alt-P I think). When you get to a page that has "Internal Modem" and "LAN Controller" on it, make sure the devices say "enabled" and not "disabled" next to them. If you have the same problem I did, they will say "disabled" and you will have to change them.

My computer still reverts them to disabled frequently, and I have to go back manually on boot-up and enable them. So the fix is not really permanent (for me at least) but it did make those devices recognized again.
