Wireless card

I have a notebook Inspiron 1300 which came with a wireless card for me to start college, the problem is it will not connect like others at school. Can someone please tell me what can be done?  Do I need an udated wireless card?

Which wireless network adapter do you have in the 1300?  Does your school require you to register the wirelesss adapter on campus to use the wireless service?  Is your wireless radio turned on (the Fn F2 key combination toggles the radio on and off)?

I can get on line but not at any distance like others can sit at tables outside the college and do there work on their notebooks but I can not. Should I still be able to get that kind of access if it's not even turned on??

Are you sure you are attempting to connect to your school's wireless network and not some random wireless network in the vicinity?

When I press those two buttons it said HP already on line an a green button is lit or something like that. I still can not check my e-mail or stay on line from any distance. Everyone at school seems to think my wireless card is bad.

Yes, I'm sure. There is a person at college that has the same notebook and he said his card went bad that he replaced it and it has worked fine ever since. I know when randomly trying to connect some are blocked so you can not use them. I had the school set me up when I first came two weeks ago maybe I should go back and check with them. I'm so confused!!!

Yes, you should check with your college support staff.  It is very much easier to solve problems like this in person that is to solve them from the other end of the internet.
