Wireless Home Network with DLink
I have a D-Link DI-524 Wireless G Router that I use to share my internet connection between a 2 year old Gateway desktop and my XPS M1530. The router works great and I get a fast wireless internet connection on my XPS M1530. My question is this: Can I network the computers together with my DI-524 router or do I need to purchase more equipment? I want to share info between computers and especially control my printer via the notebook.
My Gateway desktop is running Windows XP and the XPS M1530 Vista Home Premium. If all else fails I'd at least like to share my printer wirelessly. The router has 4 LAN ports and a WAN port if that helps. Thanks.
- i agree, it's definitely possible. make sure both computers have the same workgroup name and then just right-click the folder (or printer) and click sharing.software / personal firewalls can cause issues and will likely require some setup. it might be worth disabling them while you are setting this up so you can pinpoint them as the source of any problem. if you are worried, your router will still be acting as a basic firewall (or you could disconnect it from the internet entirely)
- first thigns first, do you have internet access on both computers? network cable unpluged just means that no ethernet cable is plugged into your network card -- it's perfectly normal to see this message on a machine that is connecting wirelessly.
- I have a Cable modem for high speed internet access with my local cable company. The ethernet cable goes from the modem to the WAN port on my DLink wireless router. Another ethernet cable from one of the 4 LAN ports to the back of my desktop. My desktop runs Windows XP Media Center & the notebook (XPS M1530) runs Windows Vista Home Premium. I get an excellent internet connection via WiFi on the notebook but I also want to primarily be able to share the printer thats connected to my desktop. The printer is connected via a USB cable and does not have wireless capabilities.

to do this
on the desktop (to which the printer is connected using usb cable):
start
control panel
printers and faxes
find the name of your printer there...
right clik
properties
clik on sharing tab
share the printer (make sure the box is checked )
u can gve it a share name - usually it says a share name dellphot - something - u can always change it - u will need to locate this name on the xps to access it from there
apply these settings on the printer -
clik on ok - u can verify whether its available on sharing by looking at the printer icon - the icon has a "hand" or a "palm" symbol underneath it indicating its available for sharing.
now on the xps notebook
clik
start
control panel
printers and faxes
clik on " add printer"
select the appropriate option : a printer connected to another computer or a printer that is available on the network.
clik next
select browse for the printer
clik next
now--BROWSE for the printer
next window - clik on the + signs to find the computer name for the desktop computer..under which u'll find the "share name" for your dell printer. higlight it - clik next .....printer gets added - u;ll notice this on the printer symbol on the xps - the printer icon will have a pipeline indicating its a network printer.
another device that recently found for connecting any printer wirelessly on any computer - a Belkin Print server - basically a wireless printer adapter. Dell also has its wireless 3300 adapter- but sharing is an easier option.........

its possible
it cud be a little tricky since its vista and xp and not same same windows versions. but its possible - to share folders between the 2 computers. router will be the common medium for it
printer - possible -
2options :
a) go for wireless installation so that printer is available on the network ( printer shud be wireless capable)
b) have the printer installaed on 1 of the computers ( preferably XPS vista )and share it on the network then
