I purchased a Dell 1150 Insperion Notebook loaded with pretty much everything. I ordered the wireless card 811 a/b/g, being told that I would be able to access the internet with just that. Do I need a router too? Do I need to sign up for an internet service or can I just hack into other networks with just the card? This is my only computer and this is all very new to me. I just want to know how to get wireless internet with this computer alone, for as cheap as possible. Thank you
You need an ISP service, then a wireless router or access point. I hope we here don't even have to mention the illegality of using someone else's unprotected wireless service.....
who said it's illegal to use someone else's wireless? hehe. it's not... the FCC, or who ever, made 2.4ghz an open freq so there are no restictions on use.. even residental... so if you dont secure and someone else uses your interenet... oh well... :) [so secure your wireless...]
Do you leave your house unlocked? if you do, do you have the right to complain about people entering when yoru not there? i woudln't think so... yes, it's illegal, but people can/still do it... so like your house, you should secure your wireless...
I restrict by MAC address and WEP and turning off wireless broadcast, ... so NO ONE gets on mine.
Those measures will slow down a good hacker, but there is sniffer software out there to overcome WEP and MAC filtering. I use a 256 bit WEP key, MAC filtering, changed SSID, do not broadcast the SSID, and turn off wireless when I won't be using it for a while. And I do lock my house. But that doesn't change the fact that it is theft of service. Open or protected, using a WAP that isn't yours and isn't a public access point, is stealing.
i AM IN THE PROCESS OF LOOKING FOR A ROUTER. CAN YOU GUYS TELL ME THE SPEFICS ON WHAT I SHOULD LOOK FOR IN TERMS OF SECURITY? I HAVE AN XPS AND WANT G. AND HOW DO YOU TURN OFF THE BROADCAST WHEN NOT IN USE? I'M WAITING FOR MY XPS RIGHT NOW AND I WANT TO BUY A ROUTER TO SHARE WITH MY DESKTOP. ALSO, CAN YOU CONNECT WIRELESSLY TO YOUR PRINTER (922?)
after looking on reviews i have narrowed my choices down to 2 routers. can you comment on which one would be better? i'm looking just to share printer and internet capabilities and just for home use. i have the xps inspirion so i am able to use g or b. can you also tell me if i have to set something up to use teh g wireless or will that be automatic? and do i only need a router to make this happen? i'm seeing routers combined with pci cards. what are teh cards for? is that only if i dont have the wireless set up internally in my laptop? thanks for your help.
I have the WRT54g and it works just fine for me. It has NAT, DMZ, port forwarding, UPnP, used as a repeater, some other really neat features and is straight forward and easy to setup. My only complaint is wireless range; I was hoping for about a half-mile or so ... :)
Mike.
ps: You might want to start a new thread titled "Two routers, need PROS and CONS of both" and see what turns up.
I would go with linksys, their routers have a lot of feautures.
About wireless to a printer, try looking at a Wireless B or G print server (Linksys, D-link, Silex all make them), dont get the cheapest they dont always work.
