In place upgrade on Optiplex 7040 error.
I am attempting an in place upgrade from Win 7 Enterprise 64 bit to Win 10 Enterprise 64 bit. The process is not giving me the option to keep all my apps and files, This area is greyed out. The error I am receiving is:
"Your files apps and settings can't be kept because you're installing an edition of windows that's different than the one you're currently using."
I have done the following:
-updated the drivers and BIOS
-fully patched Windows 7
-confirmed there are no other languages other than US-English installed in Windows and in Office
-confirmed there are no other languages installed in Office other than US-English
-the system locale is US
-made sure that the Program Files folders are located in the proper drive and directory in the registry
-Windows 7 is 64 bit as well as the Win 10 upgrade I am attempting to install
-the version of Office installed is 2013, I have uninstalled that as well using the Microsoft Office uninstaller.
-uninstalled the Anti Virus.
I am in a corporate environment and have had no issues with our Optiplex 9010 or 9020 PCs. It is only the 7040s which I cannot upgrade. So far I have had about 8 that will not upgrade so it does not appear to be an anomaly with just one machine.
7 Enterprise to 10 Enterprise in place should work just fine - it IS supported by Microsoft.

Could it be a Group Policy ?
And since when do we treat client workstations as some "NON expendable crew-member" that can't be erased and reloaded (in an hour or so). Including the need to overlay-upgrade ... like you are try to save something valuable? :Indifferent:

Mary G: You can perform in place upgrades from Win 7 to Win 10 and keep your files and applications, as stated in my original post I have had no issues at all with 9010 and 9020's It's just the 7040's I've been having issues with.
I decided to perform a test to see if this was a group policy issue or possibly even an SCCM issue so I attempted the upgrade just using the bits straight from the server without going through SCCM. (this process is no different than using the Microsoft upgrade tool). I still get the same error.
The reason why I would prefer to perform the upgrade as opposed to a clean image is that these are engineering test stations. If I do a clean re-image it will take the engineers days to get all of their applications installed and licenses for the applications straightened out.

Remove the other install versions from the ISO so it only includes the Enterprise version you need.

No such thing as an in place upgrade when installing windows 10. It must be a clean install since it is a completely diff operating system. Copy all your personal files--docs, photos, music-- everything you've added. You cannot save anything from windows 7. If you have backups made in windows 7 you will be able to launch windows 7 backup in win 10, but copies on removable media is safer. All programs not included in windows must be reinstalled if compatible with windows 10.
