I'd like to place an order for a PE2900 with the following config, the website won't allow it. Is this configuration possible on ANY Dell system?
2 SAS drives in Flex Bay
3+ SATA in Hotswap Bay.
1x Floppy
1x DVD-Rom
1x PV110T LTO2 LC tape Drive.
What I really want is FAST/MIRRORED SAS drives for loading the OS and other critical programs and data. Then utilize multiple inexpensive drives in a RAID-5 for storage of HUGE Read-Only DBs. The client wants all this in a single box - no external disk array.
The configurator implies that the Flex & Hotswap bays need to be the SAME type of drives. Can't I add a 2nd SAS controller (adaptec or other) and have the internal one utilize the SAS drives and the adaptec utilize the SATA drives?
Are there ANY Dell server that would support mixing SAS and SATA in the same server? Or plane SCSI and SATA that would have space for 6+ drives - 2 mirrored & 4+RAID5
You would probably have to go external to use 2 different drive types and put sas drives in the server with sata drives in an
MD1000 (attached to a PERC5).
Actually what you are trying to do will work, but you may have to contact sales to get it setup this way.
You CAN mix SAS and SATA in the same server on the same controller and it will work (and Dell does suppor it). You can NOT mix SAS and SATA in the same ARRAY. IE - A 2 drive SAS Mirror and a 3 drive SATA RAID 5 will work fine.
